The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

Pours a dark ruby with a very thin head that fades to nearly nothing. Smells sour with fruits. Taste is fruity and sour with a dry finish. Very bubbly carbonation. I’m sure it is very true to the style but I’m not a fan of the sour.

Maybe it’s because I haven’t been able to get any Flemish Sour Ale here in years, but jeez - I love this brew. Beautiful deep red with a moth watering fruity sour aroma. taste is aggressively sour with a nice lingering tang that doesn’t overpower. Fantastic!

This was an interesting experience since I didn’t know anything about the Flemish sour ale. Most likely an acquired taste.

Pours a deep raisin colour, with minimal head. The aroma notes include fig, sour apple, toasty malts, and raisins. The tasting notes include sweet fruity sour, blended with a complex mix of fig, toasty malts, and has almost a Sherry character to it. Excellent! My favorite Lambic to date!

One of the all-time classic Flanders reds. So many of them taste like saccharine fermented cola, but Jacobins is nuanced, tart, authentically fruity with cherry pits, and woody without being tannic.

Bottle. Dark amber, creamy tan head. High delicate carbonation. Aroma of dark fruit, cherry, jam, yeast, hints of oak and lilac. Medium sticky. Fruit sourness and slightly herbal. Very delicate Brett character without overpowering. A little cloying on the finish. Probably should have let this sit. Still, very nice.

This was my favorite beer of the 8 I tried at Prohibition Taproom’s Sour Event during Philly Beer Week. This was an awesome sour!

11.2oz served in a snifter. Lots of speckled lacing. A - Pours a reddish brown with a thin cap of tan bubbles. S - Very acetic sour aroma, old wet basement wood, good amount of funk, old bruised fruit, tart raspberries, some sweetness as well. T - Slap your Grandma sour! There’s a brief second of sweet malt upfront but then the lacto sour slowly builds reaching it’s toe curling climax at the very end. Lots of tart and fermented fruit going on. Highly acetic but a great blend of light brown sugar sweetness. Raspberries are the most notable fruit. Salty wood and balsamic hit right at the finish. M - Light bodied, crisp sour finish. Wow this was lip smacking sour with just the right amount of sweetness. More funky brett presence than I expected. My favorite Flanders Red. Serving type: bottle 11-02-2012

2013/06/20 - Pours a clear, deep red mahogany color with a foamy off white head. Aroma is vinegar, cherries, barnyard and smoked wood. Taste is very subdued compared to aroma. Tart cherries and lemon with a slight barnyard aftertaste. Oily body with low to medium carbonation and a puckering finish. Not my style, but a surprisingly smooth sour ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
