The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

Bottle picked up at SL.. Love the nose on this... lots of cherries, slight saw dust, wood notes, tart/sourness. Dark red in color, small head that faded quickly. Taste follows the nose... Nice tart/sour cherry taste, some dark fruits, wood notes, really lively! Lots of flavor for a low alcohol beer. Very complex. Body has a good amount of carbonation but still smooth. Overall: I forgot what I paid for this but it really doesnt matter, this was very enjoyable, the rita hayworth of redheads! Thanks to matt for the rec!

On tap at Congregation Ale House. Nice tart nose, cherries and light hops, balsamic sweetness and light oak. Dark coppery brown clearn with creamy off-white lacing head. Medium-heavy body with medium-high carbonation. Starts tangy and tart, with sweet and sour cherries, lactic-balsamic acidity and caramel, oak. Tart finish, light astringency with nice cherry pie after. Delicious.

Thanks to curly for the trade. Dark brown, loose white head. Really nice aroma of cherry, lemon, and oak. Nicely tart, with a lot fruit character, plus citrus, vinegar, and oak. Tasty and easy drinking.

The beer arrives from the tap topped by a creamy, amber tinged, tan colored, one-finger thick head. The beer is a concentrated amber color. The nose smells primarily of lactic acidity, with a backdrop of fruity notes that hint at cherries. There is a touch of oxidized malt richness here as well some caramelized malt aromatics.

The flavor is definitely tart, even leaning towards sour. It is quite dry up front, but does pick up some sweetness and even an acetic bit as it moves towards the finish. The acidity is predominantly lactic in character, which is good. Other flavors of cherry, some earthiness, maybe a touch of oak and some astringency are noticeable here.

This beer is actually fairly simplistic, it is satisfying and tasty though.

Purchased at Fox & Obel in Chicago, IL with the help of a Groupon, enjoyed on a Sunday afternoon prior to eating some homemade chili. Appearance a cola like brown with a dark ruby red base and a small white head that rims around the glass. Aroma of sour cherries, small touch of vanilla, bit of sour, smells nice and slightly complex. Taste is definitely sour but not as sour as other sours I’ve had. Cherries are the dominating factor, and I do get a bit of the cocoa in the flavor as well which is unique. It’s highly carbonated, kind of a belcher, which I haven’t particularly noticed from other sours I’ve had. It’s definitely not an easy drinker, a small sipper, but it is enjoyable. Happy to have purchased.

Tap at hay merchant Houston. Dark copper and clear. Nose is slight sweet, a bit woody. Taste is a bit sugary, with hints of cherries and wood. Slight tartness on the end. Decent and unique.

Beautiful color. Sweet smell with a sharp tart beginning. Finishes with a bit of vinegar taste. Overall, very nice beer.
