The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

Der saure Beginn wirkt leicht gesüßt, was aber nicht schlimm ist. Frisch, angenehme Kirschnoten, rund, sehrsüffig. 11/10/11/11/11/11

Bottle thanks to Mar. Puts light brown/red with off-white head. Aroma is very acidic and dusty. Flavor is acidic, rustic, cherry. Light mouthfeel with fizzy carbonation. Overall, excellent brew.

Very strong sour beer. Red in color with a thin, white head. This beer really makes your glands water!

Bottle at Gainsbar. Dark red/brown colour with little golden head. Aroma is predominately sour but with a touch of sweetness too. Lots of cereal, dark fruit, marzipan and lots of acidity. Taste is very sour, vinous, then mellows in mouth to sweeter yet still sour finish. Quite spiky, and plenty of sour fruitiness.

Dark, clear reddish-amber with a small ring of off-white head. Aroma of sour cherries, chocolate, sour apple, and vanilla. Taste is good and sour and a bit sweet and woody. Medium bodied and slightly syrupy. Very nice.

Wow, I was lucky to have this. What a solid sour ale. Great funky nose, must and oak. Taste is green apple, cherry, subtle oak. Amazing carbonation and mouthfeel.

Dark ruby, fluffy tan head. Smells of tart cherries and raspberries, sugar and sweet caramelized oak, apples, limes. Has a burst of tart and acidity, cherries and a multitude of berries with some lemon bringing out the citrus, evident sweetness and strong sourness. Strong up front sourness and acidity, with a nice sweetness all around like granulated sugar, reminds me of the feeling of eating a pear. Bit of a sipper with the sweetness and acidity.

From notes. First reviewed 6/28/2011. Served on tap in a tulip at Hopleaf. This comes out with a dark brown addition to a cherry color, with just a little light able to sneak through. An off-white ring is all the head I get. From the aroma, I can tell this one is going to be sour. Great tart cherry aroma, with a bit of raspberry, vanilla, and oak. The vinegar nature of the beer is already apparent. The flavor is fully tart, there is no doubt about it. A robust dark orchard fruit blend is led by red cherry, with a good amount of vanilla and oak adding some depth to the flavor without getting in the way of the strong vinegar and tartness. After a few sips, my taste buds recover from the tartness a little bit, and sweet cherry and raspberry flavors are noticeable at the beginning of the sip. This is sour and acidic enough to keep me salivating from first sip until five minutes after I am finished with the glass. Still medium bodied, with lightly bubbly / lightly creamy medium carbonation. A tannic dryness finishes out each sip. This really connected with what I was after at the moment. The combination of dark fruits and a fire hose blast of sour really rocked my palate.

11.2oz bottle. Rating #267. Clear brownish/amber/red pour with a thin white head. Fruity and a little musty, raspberries, grapes and cherries all combined and very sour. Sweet and tart at the same time, kinda like smartees, tart berries and a real nice clean finish. Real nice stuff. (2210)

Pours pretty brown with a tinge of red with nice white head with soapy bubbles on top. Aroma is basalmic vinegar and sour cherries. Not much funk in there. Taste is very sharp sour with a bit of clean funk in the finish. Taste is very much of sour cherries with a bit of lingering sweetness. Mouthfeel is fairly syrupy, but that is a bit expected. Absolutely great beer and preferred to the similar rodenbach grand cru.
