The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

This is a very fine sour ale which pours a crystal clear amber color w/ a neat white head that’d make you think you were getting a boring old amber ale from the looks of things. Spending a second w/ the nose on this thing though will avow you of this notion. It has a deep tart cherry character which is very lovely and it gets even better once you taste it. The palate has a decent weight to it but the beer is quite sour w/ vigorous carbonation so it drinks quite easily. I am impressed by this beer. It strikes me as somewhat refreshing and something that you could drink in moderate quantity but you could also linger over it for some time if you so choose.

Tap @ Victory... Poured deep, burgundy with a white head. Some noticeable funk, but still very clean. Hints of berries, cherries, candied sugars, bubblegum, grains, and a yeast sourness in the finish.

Rather tart but some nice sweetness to balance. Wine like qualities. Serving: Draft

quality stuff here with some really nice complexity. notes of curry, balsamic/malt vinegar, mineral notes with some iron-like character, coriander. very little true "malt" character, more sort of raw and doughy mid-palate. even lower on the hops. really nice brett presence -- tart cherries that fade to more of an almost strawberry taste, and the typical "barnyard" ntes come off to me as, well, dry cloth, but in a much more appealing way than that sounds. complex, delicious, layered, and very refreshing. a perfect accompaniment to banh canh do bien, as it turns out.

Bottle, via Maxxdaddy I think @ RBWG 2010. Pours a clear reddish body with a small fizzy white head. Nice sour nose with lots of cherry skins, a little acetic with a touch of oak. The flavor is dry and tart with a more noticeable oak note. A little brighter than the Ommegang Rouge. Mouthfeel is crazy drying with a heavy raw oak tannic finish. Nice, but not as good as the Ommegang Rouge.

On draft at Capital Alehouse Innsbrook. Pours a clear brown with fair khaki head ring and some lacing. Nose is like an old, stale cherry poptart. Flavor is very sweet, almost like a pixie stick, but has a mildly acidic, solid sour tone that gives a nice balance. Dark fruitiness, sweet and dry on the palate. Decent enamel remover. Not the best sour, but not the worst either. The high price is a shame though....

Like a slightly toned down/less acidic Rodenbach Grand Cru. Normally, that would be a bad thing, but it went down great on draft at the Map Room, Chicago. I’d like to try this again while less "hop enhanced", as I remember it being delicious, but the above is all I had jotted down as notes.

Draft @ Brouwer’s Sour Fest; dense brown with trace white head; zesty cherries with a strong, warming sourness; mild vinegar with yummy sour cherries, barnyard funk and mild poopy cheese; so much more texture and zesty sourness here compared to the other sours sampled; lovely strong tartness with creamy texture; great stuff
Earlier Rating: 4/15/2010 Total Score: 4.2
Draft @ Bottleworks; clear light brown prickly nose and nice acidic sourness; light tam head lasting ; mild grape skins, brown sugar; not too heavy, a little oaky sweetness too; good stuff; some berry creaminess; yummy; dry, cookie finish; raspberries too; a damn good sour
