The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

On tap at The Meddlesome Moth. Pours dark reddish amber with small off-white head. Aromas of sour cherries, some wood, dark malt, and light vanilla. Flavors of sour cherries, bit of vinegar, wet oak, and some vanilla. Finishes with good amount of mouth puckering goodness. Great sour and a nice surprise.

Pours a wonderful deep red with a dark head. very sweet nose. Tangy on the tongue, very acidic and sour. I’m no Flemish geek but this is just about the best one I have ever had.

Bottle. Pours a deep mahogany with almost no head or lacing but a steady stream of fine bubbles. Aroma is sour cherries, some nice funk, bit of vinegar, some wood. Flavor is sour cherries, puckering sourness, mild funky yeast, slight citrus, some pear, good bit of oak, wood, vanilla. Mouthfeel is a bit astringent, fine carbonation, medium weight. Love it.

(1st ever beer review); It pours with a brownish-red color with a decent initial head. The aroma is good but kinda leans towards the vinegar smell, however that seems to change as the beer gains some warmth in the glass. It surprises you on the first taste... It’s a puckering sour with the taste of tart cherries and finishes clean. Like other sours, time in a glass help expand the flavors that this beer has. Don’t rush the 11.2 oz of sour ale and allow it to mature as you drink it.

Sweet & sour cherries, S - tart cherries, mild vinegar T- vibrant sweet and sour cherries. Very well balance between the sourness and the sweet fruity cherries. Faint oakiness in there as well. Overall an exceptional beer! I would drink it again!

On draft at the Half Moon in Kennett. The pour was ruby red-tan, the head off white and average. The aroma was tart cherries, vanilla, faint faint oak. The flavor followed, tartness was present but not overdone, well complemented the base flavors, tannins and bret touches done well. Each sip seemed to change delicately with the temperature. Good stuff.

Smooth, easy-drinking. Not overly complex and more on the funky side. Sour cherry, touch of wood.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2012 Pours a dark red color with a small amount of head. Big aroma of sour fruit, cherries, berries, and a little vanilla. Taste is like having a liquid jolly rancher. I haven’t had a lot of sour ales but this is definitely the most sour I’ve had and I think it was too much for me. Very acidic and vinegar like finish. I appreciate what this beer does and I enjoyed drinking it, but its just not my favorite style. Definitely an acquired taste and I’m not totally there yet.

On draught at DBA in Brooklyn, no cute story... just a beer on draught that I drank and rated.

Pours a deep reddish brown with a small but well retained head.

The aroma is lots of sour cherry, wet wood and a little bit of balsamic vinegar.

The flavor is mostly lots of sour cherries, the beer is earthy, bracingly sour, only mildly sweet right up front but finishes very dry.

I’d like to find a few of the bottles!

Bottle. Aroma has huge notes of sour cherry, raspberry, citrus, vanilla and sweet tarts. Awesome. Dark brown reddish hue with a small off-white head that mostly diminished and left little lace. Flavor is heavy sweet, tart and sour. Palate is medium bodied and watery soft. Overall a very nice sour tart brew that really delivered the tartness in spades. A good one!
