COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

Draft @ Brouwer’s Sour Fest; dense brown with trace white head; zesty cherries with a strong, warming sourness; mild vinegar with yummy sour cherries, barnyard funk and mild poopy cheese; so much more texture and zesty sourness here compared to the other sours sampled; lovely strong tartness with creamy texture; great stuff

Draft. Pours reddish amber with an off white head. Funky bretty aroma with some light rhubarb like sweetness. The flavor has an excellent balance of funky tart bretty notes and cherry/rhubarb-esque fruity sweetness, followed by a nice dry and tart finish. Very good.

On tap at Stone Bistro. Pours a very nice and deep red color with some copper highlights and topped by a small off white colored head of foam. The aroma shows notes of soured black cherries, old wood, acidic, and some caramel malts that adds sweetness. The flavor follows with a good amount of acidic fruit to go with the sour cherries and pits, oak tannins, and some vinous grape character also. Good balance of sour and tart fruits in this one. Medium bodied and easy to drink wih ample carbonation leading to a sour cherry finish. This is very similar to Ommegang Rouge. Nice Flanders red style brew.

The beer pours a dark reddish-amber with a tan colored head. The aroma is very wine like with some tart grapes and cherries as well as some woody notes. The flavor is very dry with lots of medium tart cherries and grapes. There is also some tannic oak notes. This is a very wine like beer that is very easy to drink.

On tap. Pours deep merlot with a brown hue and a lasting brown head. Aroma has tart grapes with an underlying wine note. Flavor begins with tart grapes and a hint of alcohol with a slight hint of wine on the back of the tonugue.

(Draught) clear deep amber with lasting creamy offwhite head. Nose of sour cherry, light wood, honey, and other fruits. Taste of mildly tart cherry and other tart fruits. Sola-like carbonation that finishes quite creamy. A nice flanders red.

Tap @ Boston/NY 2009. Clear brownish color, short head. Aroma of cherry, raspberry, oak wood. Tart taste, oaky. Why did I have to travel all the way to the US to get this? :-)

Toronado. A good to very good Flanders Red, which is always a treat. I tried this beer against Rodenbach Grand Cru, and, though it wasn’t quite up to that world class beer, it still had a quite good showing. Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge looks about the same as any Flanders Red, perhaps leaning toward red rather than mahogany. Small white head. This beer smells and tastes of raspberries, cherries, oak and sour. It’s actually not too far from the Rodenbach beers - perhaps three quarters of the step between normal Rodenbach and the Grand Cru, though without that beer’s lovely feel. The beer was a bit more acidic than the Grand Cru, and it was fruitier and sourer to the GC’s woodier, more refined nature; still quite good. This was a satisfying Flanders red and a very good beer.
