The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

Great nose, proper color, perfect amount of sour taste, clean finish, what more could you ask for in a sour.....too bad I got the last pour before the keg blew.

Bottle @ home.

Crystal clear, deep red-brown, no head. Aroma of sour cherries, wine, oak, balsamico vinegar, burnt sugar, and a hint of vanilla. Taste is incredibly sour; delicious. The mouthfeel is light, and the carbonation is moderate. Long aftertaste with balsamico and wine-like notes.

Bottle at home. Cloudy chestnut brown colour, creamy beige head. Sour cherry and berry fruity, balsamico, tard, vinous, oaky, caramel malty base. Great flavours, especially considering the low abv. Lingering aftertaste, fruity and tard. Good body, medium carbonation.

Bottle. It poured a dark reddish/amber color with an off-white head. The aroma was of tart dark red fruits, some cherries, oak and acidity. The taste was similar to the aroma with more sourness, tartness, oak, vanilla and cherries. Good stuff.

330 ml bottle, as Cuvée des Jacobins Rouge, brewed by Brouwerij Bockor. BB date 26.08.14. From Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.5%. Deep reddish brown colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of oak, red wine, red wine vinegar and brettanomyces / farmhouse. Sweet and sour flavour, notes of red wine vinegar, sour cherries and lemon. Don’t think I’ll buy this one again.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2015 One of my absolute favourites, especially given how cheap it is in my area -- the bang for the buck ratio is insane. Dark red with a nice whitish head. Aroma: a bit weak initially, but gets stronger after a few minutes in the glass; cherries, light smoke, vanilla, fruity, somewhat funky. Medium body. Sweet-sour taste, sour cherries, plums, hints of vanilla. Vinous. Strong dry finish. Overall: very enjoyable, balanced and complex.
