COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The beer Cuvée des Jacobins is unblended old lambic, aged for at least 18 months in (French) oak barrels from the cognac region. These oak barrels are called ’Foeders’ in Dutch. It has a robust character but is beautiful and sophisticated with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa. It is a complex, beautiful sour beer.

Bottle. It poured a dark reddish/amber color with an off-white head. The aroma was of tart dark red fruits, some cherries, oak and acidity. The taste was similar to the aroma with more sourness, tartness, oak, vanilla and cherries. Good stuff.

330 ml bottle, as Cuvée des Jacobins Rouge, brewed by Brouwerij Bockor. BB date 26.08.14. From Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.5%. Deep reddish brown colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of oak, red wine, red wine vinegar and brettanomyces / farmhouse. Sweet and sour flavour, notes of red wine vinegar, sour cherries and lemon. Don’t think I’ll buy this one again.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2015 One of my absolute favourites, especially given how cheap it is in my area -- the bang for the buck ratio is insane. Dark red with a nice whitish head. Aroma: a bit weak initially, but gets stronger after a few minutes in the glass; cherries, light smoke, vanilla, fruity, somewhat funky. Medium body. Sweet-sour taste, sour cherries, plums, hints of vanilla. Vinous. Strong dry finish. Overall: very enjoyable, balanced and complex.

[7378-20150711] 330mL bottle. Fruity light malt aroma. Clear, bright amber brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. Fruity malt and toasted sour yeast flavour with a lingering aftertaste. Medium body is fairly sour. Interesting. (7/3/7/3/15) 3.5

Dark, tawny-amber color, with a reddish glow in the light. Good clarity. Thin tan foam quickly dissipates to a ring. The aroma hits the nose as it is being poured. Very intense, dominant tart cherry and raspberry notes, with hints of ripening. Touches of oak, faint herbal hops, a bit of earthy funk. Awesome aroma. Strong cherry fruit character in the taste as well, moderately tart, but balanced slightly by a vanilla caramel sweetness. The flavor doesn’t seem too heavy on the oak. Alcohol seems low. The carbonation is just strong enough for the style, and the body has a touch of syrup-like character but is mostly clean with a light to medium thickness. Overall a very nice example of the style. The flavor is quite intense and enjoyable. While the light sweetness gives a good balance, it hangs slightly in the finish, and I think I would have preferred it to lean even further in the sour direction. Perhaps a few more months in the bottle would round it out nicely.
