Medium, light-cream coloured head, fast receding over fully hazy red-brown beer. End of bottle solid yeast. Attractive mix of liqueurish notes with lactic/oud bruin sourish aromas. Hints of green leaves as holly and chocolate. As such, ideal for the holidays, I’d say. Bitter-roasted, with only a hint at lactic acid backthroat. Some yeasty features, as if not fully fermented out - which sits strange on the lactic notion. Again bitter chocolate. Not very well-bodied, spritzy MF. Long-lasting roasted features in the aftertaste. Certainly not Boelens’ worst try! It’s not obvious in which way they wanted to go, but the result is worth trying.

Clear mahogany brown. Thin lacy head. Aroma of sweet malts and dried red fruits. Flavour is on the sweet side with the dried fruits although it’s certainly very drinkable and not cloying.

Bottle from Dranken Geers in Belgium. Fruity smell with dried fruit, ripe fruit and some caramel. Sweet taste with a similar fruity aroma as the smell. A bit boozy. Full body with a slightly astringent finish.

0.33L Bottle. Pours dark brown with a rocky tan head that dissipates quicky. Rich malt and fruity yeast aromas. Cooked vegetables, alcohol,... Flavor goes almost immediately to bitterness, which is surprising given the aromas. This morphs into a strange (but not unpleasant) set of cooked vegetable/basement flavors, then the roasted malt and candi sugar starts to develop. Not something I’ve really experienced before. The sugar comes out a bit more in the end, and sticks to the back of the throat, with warm alcohol and an herby hop linger. Medium-full bodied with a thick mouthfeel and sharp feeling, but average carbonation. Overall, some interesting aromas/flavors with this beer, unique for a dubbel, but fairly heavy, so couldn’t drink too many of these.

Big beige head. Hazy deep dark red body. Deep licorice and spice aroma with syrupy notes. Dry, and faintly sweet, earthy spicy licorice taste with red berries and herbs notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, fluffy mouthfeel. Dryish herbal spicy raspberry aftertaste with earthy notes. Lovely! Vivid, subtle, full of flavour, highly drinkable. (0.33l bottle from the brewery.)

Bottle from Yamaichi. Fine strained dark fruit nose, with some caramel, marshmallows, sugar, and alc. fumes. Light reddish-brown color, good lace. Sweet dark fruit initial, serious spicing, blend of cinnamon, pepper, and candi sugar. Mild roast. A bit of harsh alc. in mid and final. Medium body, sits a bit heavy of the tongue. Interesting spiced-up dubbel. Not sure how much I really like it.
