4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 diabel (1537) - Aarschot, BELGIUM - MAY 30, 2006
Bottle - thanks to Mike (mds) for sharing! Deep brown to black, murky body. An off-white, creamy head. Smells a bit like a porter (or something in the stouty style, I was not sure - I’m ashamed I don’t know that much of these styles. Fortunately Mike (mds) said it looks indeed like a porter, so my stouty knowledge is apparently not that bad at all). The aroma had notes of liquor, fruits, flavour, fine malts like chocolate and straw, some alcohol (but despite the alcohol the complexity of the aroma is fare enough to get a 9 out of 10). Lightly bitter, lightly sweet initial flavour. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet in the end. A little bit watery, but quite smooth. Drinks very easily.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Leighton (4094) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 3, 2012
Bottle shared at DHL during Paul’s Pre-Wedding Beer Weekend. Pours cloudy auburn with a dense, foamy head. Fresh, piney and lightly yeasty aroma. Medium to big sweet flavor with toasted sugar, light caramel, bubblegum, spices, and very mild fruity tang. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Mildly warming to finish with sweet and toasty malts tinged with caramel, pine, some candi sugar, mild citrus. Dries out nicely with some sweet, toasty grassiness, mild yeast and dark, toasty candi sugar. Very good. Strong yet still highly drinkable.

Zudem hefig, nussig, abgerundet. Genussbier! 9/12/12/13/12/12

(Bottle 33 cl) Well, the alcohol alone calls for this to be labelled a Belgian strong, doesn’t it? Reddish brown beer with a fine head and the usual Boelens murkiness. Nice, scented nose. Very sweet, full body with a lot of caramel in the flavours. Some spiciness although I believe none are added. Another great Boelens beer. 300499

(Bottle, 0.33 l, at De Heeren van Liedekercke) I had this beer with food that was prepared with the same beer. This dark brown beer was quite complex. Aroma had fruitiness, spiciness, hops, chocolate and malts. Palate was full bodied and dryish with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, aniseed, spiciness, fruitiness, hops, chocolate and bitterness. Aftertaste had aniseed and malts. Rarely have I had beer with so many flavours that still match. I enjoyed drinking this.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 henrikb (1258) - Aarhus, DENMARK - JUL 27, 2006
Woodbrown body, clear red shine, beautiful beige head leaving beautiful laces; Very fine complex nose: caramel like soft sweetness, freshly cut warm Birch, warm sweet soft licorice, all in a very fine balance; Medium full body, incredibly soft with a very fine bitterness and sparkle; It finishes long but almost to soft and fine, it seems like disappearing, again lots of complex aromas: toasted wood, soft caramel. A very, very fine soft and elegant beer.

Dark and muddy chestnut brown - end of bottle full of UFO’s; tan thick head, reasonably stable. Cake, chocolate, dark leaves - and strawberries. Smoked taste, chocolate again, as in chocolate truffles, cinnamon bark and cardamom; dry-sweet. Well bodied; slightly empty finish. Rather excellent. Again, one of the "old" Boelens types. WHY, why, why can a brewery that used to make a rist of these regular winners, feel need to turn out an unending list of new tries at brewing faults? Anyway, this is lovely. Sometimes draught at the "Heeren van Liedekercke".

Bottle, 8% at De Heeren van Liedekercke. Weak grassy hop aroma (dry-hopped, I am told), with some dark sweet malts as well. Dark brown colour. Very lively with bits of yeast perpetually swirling round in the drink. Big stable creamy tan head. The flavour is mildly sweet, nicely malty. A hint of roasted malts balance off the sweetness a bit. Actually very well balanced, I think. The kind of beer I like.
