4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Papsoe (22969) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - JUL 2, 2005
(Bottle 75 cl) Beautiful dark brown with a pronounced reddish glow - presumably filtered. Creamy, light brown head, which never completely vanishes but remains afloat on top of the beer. Lightly tart and metallic nose. Dry, lightly roasted malt, with pronounced tart undertones and a dry, lightly bitter finish. Vinous with a rather light body. Reminds me of the old style I believe is called "Vlaams bruin". Unusual but very delicate. 080605
3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 diabel (1537) - Aarschot, BELGIUM - MAR 25, 2006
Bottle Hazy, deep amber-brown body. Nice frothy, off-white big head. Aroma of hops (grass - flowers), malts (nuts), white wine, perfume, apples as in apple cider. Quite complex. Flavour is int he beginning lightly bitter, lighlty sweey. In the end moderately bitter, lightly sour. Has some of the fruitiness of a flemish sour ale. Good balance, but not extraordinary due to a somewhat flat mouthfeel.
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ungstrup (23925) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - MAR 18, 2004
[ZBF 2004] A clear brown beer with a fine but disappearing head. The aroma is sweet caramel with notes of wood and plums. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel and roasted bread. It ends on a bitter hop note. A very nice beer.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 schuimkroaat (410) - Leuven, BELGIUM - MAY 18, 2005
Dark chocolate brown with a big, persistent head which reminds of whipped cream. Rotten cherry and heavy perfume in the aroma, some tea leaves also, with just a touch of vinegar. Cocoa flavour with raisins and/or fruit jam; a bit earthy, too. Like warm chocolate drink on the tongue.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 JorisPPattyn (6726) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - FEB 9, 2003
(Sample 1.5 yr. old)
Colour: dark brown with yellow-golden shine, which appears in the thick, irregular head.
Roasted malts, mocca and some madeira or port in the nose. taste gives roasted grains or coffee, something smokey. Also some malty, full sweetness. Mouthfeel is surprisingly full for only 5.5 % ABV. Tends towards a lot of unfermented(able) sugars. Nor new aftertaste.
Pretty decent beer, really. Deserves slightly more body and alcohol.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 mds (2119) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 11, 2006
Bottle. Pours an orange-copper body with a small fluffy white head and airy lace. The aroma has plenty of bread but also sweet raisins, perhaps some figs, yeast, cookies, and perfume. The flavour has some rye bread in addition to fruity hop bitterness and rich dark/toasty malts - caramel and such. Pretty good.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 pivo (2540) - GERMANY - NOV 7, 2004
Chocolately toffee aromas with some sour vinegar - like the nose! Murky dark brown color and a low lathery head. Pale taosted malt body with some cocoa. Metallic end with a drying effect. Medium body and an OK balance, though a little odd and not so convincing overall.

Brown cloured with a reddish shine. Rather malty and fruity. Dry finish. Very good for being only 5.5%ABV.

Bottle conditioned, ZBF 2004. Chestnut, low head and moderate condition. Malt and caramel in the nose, plus a touch of sweaty cheese. More malt in the mouth with a tangy fruity edge. Slight hint of roast barley in the finish which gives it a delicate dry bitterness. Listed as 6.5% in the ZBF program.
