Cask, at Newark Beer Festival, May 2004. Notes recovered from a recently unearthed old notebook. Rocket fuel is certainly an apt name. Very volatile, spirity, lighter fluid aroma. Nearly black. Flavour is like a mixture of liquidised Pontefract Cakes (licorice) and Gees Linctus cough mixture and rubbing alcohol. And the texture is pretty much how I’d guess that mix would end up too - thick and syrupy sweet. Really difficult to know what to make of this. Leave it in the barrel to settle down for another year and you might have something a bit more developed and harmonious. As it is, its all over the place. A couple of extra points on the overall score for potential.

Cask Stillage at the Victoria Leisure Centre, Nottingham 16/10/2003 Dark and quite sweet with plenty of alcohol. Slightly chocolaty flavour to the lasting finish.

Brown and orange with no head. Aromas are sweet and sour with musty yeast. Not off - just not that nice. Flavours are yeasty with sweet caramel. Thick and sickly on the palate. Has a bit of the kit homebrew barley wine I once made. Stronger is not always better - this is a bit of a mess. Surprisingly, alcohol is not the evident in the taste. Have a Bonce Blower instead if strong beers are your thing.

Dark coughing syrup, flows in the same way; not a bubble gets a chance. Bit of tar, and a full ashtray after a very long disco night - as well as the first morning coffee in a big hospital make out the nose. When I was young, we used liquorice sweet " drop " to make "coffee" with. If I had had a press with some Archimedes screw, I might have obtained this - without the alcohol, of course, but it has no more flavour. Well, OK, the finish is somewhat vinous. With tobacco ash. Syrupy MF. No, make that just plain syrup. They tried something. It failed. Is Boggart Hole Clough still operational, S.T.? Barley Wine?

this is certainly one to flush out your organs. forget about nitrogen car kits, stick a pint of this in your tank and it’ll be goodbye today...see you next millenium. i think most people buy this for the novelty. beers of this strength cannot be taken seriously. dark, sweet and sickly. one of those you close a day at the festival with and to keep the fire burning till you get home. i really find it hard to rate this beer in figures. i gave it 6 but i dont regret having it, just wouldnt have it again, ive done my time.

Cask Conditioned at The Ship & Mitre, Liverpool. This is now the strongest beer I have ever knowingly had, though the 20 yr old Hardy's may have been above it. It is as black as the night with a red hint, no particular head. Imagine the Jollop the Doctor gave you as a kid to get rid of a particularly heavy cough and this is what you have but with an extra alcohol through the nose blast. Linctus and Bluebird Treacle toffee converge in a heady mix. Not for the faint hearted, but I've not had a cough since!!
