3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 chriso (7065) - London, - MAY 11, 2005
As others have remarked, the alcohol level is very low for a stout. So I was expecting something that tended towards a mild. However, despite a slightly thin mouthfeel, its undoubtedly a stout rather than a mild. Definite dark chocolate aroma with a dry cocoa/coffee ground flavour. Noticeably bitter, maybe even a touch tart. An unusual stout but, in the end, its OK but unspectacular. Too lightweight to score higher. Cask (handpump), Wenlock Arms, February 2005.
2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20 DeepBlack (386) - Derby, Derbyshire, ENGLAND - FEB 19, 2005
Straight from the Cask at the Chesterfield Beer Festival on 04/02/05.
Deep Ruby Black colour.
Bit eggy this one :( Also pretty wasny for a stout. Tasted bit like an underfermented home brew to me
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 kook (2033) - Perth, Western Australia, AUSTRALIA - FEB 6, 2005
Coffee aroma. Black with a tan head. Sweet malts, chocolate and coffee/roast notes. Bit thin, but suprisingly good for the low alcohol.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 duff (5483) - St, Margarets, Greater London, ENGLAND - FEB 6, 2005
Cask@The Wenlock Arms, London. Surprisingly low in alcohol. Only 3.5%. I thought it did fairly well for flavour and body given the low ABV. But, yes, the flavour was restricted a little. Some thin instant coffee powder, and some light acidity and bitterness. I like my stouts a bit bigger than this.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Joeh (2036) - Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND - FEB 3, 2005
Cask at the Wenlock Arms, not too far from Old Street station, London.. With Chris_o, joet, Duff & Kook. Low in alcohol for a stout this actually had a hint of character despite being mostly boring. Very dark, almost black with little head. Aroma is butterscotch and roasted malt. Flavour is sweet malt with some roasted/burnt malt in the background and a hint of butter.
