COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cherny (english interpretation) means "black" in Czech (actually cerné). Bock (meaning "goat" in German) has it’s roots coming from the north of Germany near the town of Einbeck. Over the years it made it’s way south to the Bavarian/Bohemian borders allowing brewing artisans to perfect it’s recipes. Our bock is a Czech rendition of the great beer combining the best of ingredients. Very deep black-red in color, Cherny Bock is a rather surprising dark single bock lager with a gentle bitterness, a lightly hoppy aroma and a roasted malt flavor to appeal to all your senses. A true gem to be discovered by true specialty beer lovers.

Draught at The Beerhive, Salt Lake City, UT. Near black, small head. Caramel and slight hay in he nose. Mid dry with clean, rounded mouthfeel. Caramel, cocoa salt and grain, fairly low bitterness. Like a cleaner, drier interpretation of a dark Czech 14 degree beer. Pretty good!

Hey 4% ABV Bock, hmm. Can courtesy of Utah legend douglas88. It pours a nice mahogany with mocha head. The modest aroma emits roasted malts, chocolate and earthiness and seems to pick up a faint touch of fruity esters and dusty malt balls. The taste is pretty full with a mix of dark roasted malts, earthiness, chocolate malts, some black licorice and spicy hops. It gets a bit more spicy hops like as well as carrying around a bit of roasty malts right into the finish helping to give it a somewhat dry finish.

Can thanks to Douglas! Pours dark brown with a slight hue of read and a gray head that dissipated quickly to the edges. Aroma has a nice dark grain note with some notes of roast and coffee to add a bit of bitterness to the nose. Flavor starts with dark grains and roast but they dissipated into a weak thin finish.

In short: A slim, fruity and a bit earthy/herbal dark lager. Somewhat faithful recreation of a Czech Tmavé in a can. Just ok.
How: Can 12oz. Consumed probably fresh purchased by crazy Utah local douglass88, dropped at my place, then consumed one month later. Thanks Doug.
The look: Coca-cola appearance but with a large dark beige head with medium retention
In long: Nose of dry toasted herbs, forest floor, dark fruits. Taste of sparse dark malts, some roastiness, some dark fruits flavors (raisins with a little figs, dates and prunes) wrapped in smooth dark carame, subtle chocolate notes, bready notes, forest floor. Body is a bit water yet also a bit creamy. Light dry herbal hops presence. A little sourness in the fruity flavors just didn’t sit well with me. Looking at the description it seems that Bohemian Brewery were aiming at creating a Czech dark lager (called Tmavé over-there) and put it in a can in North-America. And surprisingly it is not a failure. That beer did take me back to my pub-crawling in Czech Republic. Kind of faithful to the its roots really. However the Tmavé was very often the least interesting beers I drank in Czech Republic, so this somewhat faithful recreation in a can did not get me all excited either. Not a great beer but worth drinking anyway if only because an American brewery trying to create faithful Czech style beers is about as unusual as seeing an job offer for the vice-president of the anarchist league.

UPDATED: MAY 19, 2009 Re-rate: the first time I had this at the Bayou, I wasn’t much of a fan. I had it on tap at the brewery today and was blown away! Pours a very dark chestnut color with a huge foamy beige head. The aroma is excellent; rich malts, roasted chocolate, light hops. The flavor was great; nutty, bready malts, light chocolate, roasted flavors like a Stout but with all the goodness of a Bock. Excellent. I was amazed how beautiful the pour was and how good this tasted. My original rating was off of a old or bad batch. Very nice.
