4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 GandGKevin (592) - Virginia Beach, USA - MAY 7, 2009
Growler courtesy of Immy. Thanks! It was the best beer at the tasting. Aromas of molasses, toffee, coffee and a little hint of smoke. Pours dark brown. Flavors along the same lines as the aromas and is simply delicious! A few folks were so impressed at the beer tasting that they are planning road trips to get more.

Ok, unless this brewery got in a bad batch of hops or I’m suddenly not sensitive to the herb, Bold City is not good at adding enough hops. They are, however really good with the malt. In a style like this, they’re playing to their strengths. Almost a porter.

Draft. Pours dark brown with a red tint and a frothy tan head; good retention and lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, and dark fruit. Flavor is malt forward, dark fruit esters, and light hops. Medium body, carbonation, and warmth.

On draft at Bold City. Pours a deep stout brown with a tan head. Nose is roast, some pine, cocoa, chocolate, and unsweet chocolate with spice and earth. Flavor is similar with roast, pine, cocoa, and chocolate. Medium in body and while not a red ale, still a great beer.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 raradel (94) - Greenville, South Carolina, USA - APR 18, 2011
This brew is just not what you expect. Once you understand that it is good. Its is dark and roasty but not as heavy as it looks. It is like a red ale and a stout mixed, which is a really nice combo, especially mixed with a lighter brew like the dukes ( Red Dog!). I would say this is a great surprise, so try it!

Part of a flight at the brewery. As the description says, this dude is pretty roasty. Probably one of the roastiest strong ales I’ve come across. My favorite of the flight.

Draft. A deep dark brown pour with tan head. Roasted malts in the nose. Taste is the same. Very crisp and very good! This is more like a Porter.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 ditmier (1509) - Boise, Idaho, USA - MAY 3, 2010
2010 Bottle - Thanks tarheels86!!! - Pours a dk clear amber with a large sandy hear...apparently the name is a bit of a red herring?? Aroma is malty and grainy, plenty of roast, light cocoa...flavour is sweet and fruity right up front, roasted grains, chocolate...lingering light bitterness...this was totally different than I expected...kinda thin for the abv, and not a real abundance of flavour input, but drinkable and enjoyable....

very nice in appearance with some foam, and its nice and red to brownish dark beer. Very sweet beer, nice malt levels, and for its style it is a dcent beer, its about my favorite they have. after a few its a tad too sweet and i like malty beers.
