Near black body with a thick head. Nice plummy aroma with light chocolate. Bitter chocolate palate with a hint of smoke and some subtle dark fruit. Bitter, dry finish with light milk chocolate accents.

on tap-pours a light brown head that laces and dark brown color with red tint. Aroma is northwest hops-citrus, secondary roasty medium malt-licorice. Taste is northwest hops-citrus, secondary roasty medium malt-licorice/brown sugar. Although after half it didn’t mesh so well but still interesting and occasional.

Keg at the brewery during RBWG 2013 - Jacksonville. Pours brown with a sturdy, tan cream head. Pretty mellow stuff, light smokiness, some earthy bitterness, faint cocoa. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Mild bitterness to finish, light roast, low smoke. Tasty if a bit simple.

Draft… Pours clear and nearly black (ruby with an orange tint when held up to light) with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki head. Good retention. The bouquet is roasted, acrid and a hint smoky. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Bitter, burnt, charcoal-like flavor. Acrid, scorched finish.

UPDATED: DEC 24, 2008 Pint at the brewery tap room in Riverside. Pours a deep brown almost black with a thin, tan, creamy head. Aromas mostly muted but there are some chocolate and roasted malts and coffee. Flavor is full-bodied with an enormous balancing hops, brown sugar, and faint smoked malt. Very drinkable and not too light. 8% is barely noticeable as seems to be the case with most of the Bold City beers. Probably my favorite offering aside from the Chinook IPA, which is not listed yet on this site.

1/12/13. Growler from the brewery. Black pour with a nice tan head that fades to a thick ring and laces plenty. Rich roasted malts in the aroma with some coffee and fruitiness - not a ton of smoke. Rich roasted malt flavor as well with big tannic malt bitterness, coffee, chocolate, and a touch of smoke and fruitiness. Not very much smoke, but I suppose that suit’s Bold City’s crowd. Otherwise, tasty!

Pours a deep brown .. mild foam .. lacing is good .. . medium mouth feel .. . smoke is quite subtle .. . well balanced . .. not bad, but i’m a pacifier for smokey brews .. . . the person who first tried cottage cheese must have been a fruit loop..

Draught at Kickback’s. Pitch black with thick tan head. Aroma is hard to pick up but includes some asphalt (which I always find pleasant) and not a lot of smoke. Quaffable mouthfeel. Not smoky enough for my palate. Lots of roasted malt, slightly burnt but still fun to drink.

Black pour with creamy tan head and lace. Aroma of burnt coffee, roasted malt, and smoke. Sour malt, toasted malt, coffee, and light smoke. Medium bodied and fizzy.

This draft brew from the brewery poured a medium sized head of foamy fine to medium sized dark tan colored bubbles that were very long lasting and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque dark brown colored body and an excellent lacing. The aroma was malty and smoky. The mouth feel was tingly at the start with a mellow finish with a mellow smoky aftertaste. The flavor contained notes of smoky and brown malt. An OK brew just nothing special.
