3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20 dortmunder (961) - Herdecke, - NOV 29, 2004
Slightly cloudy red/brown colour. Nice, foamy head. Aroma is reminiscient of the better Düsseldorf Alts, but the taste is a bit lacklustre. Not that it´s bad, slightly caramelly, hints of roastmaltiness, but given the smooth, creamy texture and the nice aroma, I expected a bit more character.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 kiwianer (500) - Mönchengladbach, GERMANY - MAY 6, 2012

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - MAY 1, 2012
April 2009: 50cl Brown flip-top bottle, with 5 months life left according to the rear label.
This is the beer that saved the brewery. They were going through a rough patch some years back (everyone around their area was drinking Hannan and Diebels Alt), so they re-introduced this original, unfiltered alt and it took off in a big way. I did a brewery trip back in the 90’s and was told this while there.
I still have an original Bolten Ur-Alt glass and I used that when reviewing the beer.
Just as how I remembered it, a cloudy amber colour with a huge creammy coloured head, sparkling yet moody looking.
The aroma is a mix of hops, malts and peat fires rolled into a brown, toasted ham sandwich.
I think the suggestion of roasted/burnt malts take the beer to a higher plain than the aroma in the flavour stakes, and it has is a lovely rich log fire feel to it.
Very, very drinkable. The best Alt in the world? Could well be, I’ll be ording some more, that’s for sure.

Bottle:
Medium to bigger vast fluffy white head on top of a mix between dark amber and dark ruby colored beer.

Taste a pilsner with hints of chocolate, low bitter, caramel, barley, some herbs.
Aftertaste is kind of a short mix of bitter and caramel barley malts.
Low to none carbo, watery mouthfeel, low to lightly medium body and a watery texture.
Strange beer, dull but with a nice chocolate malty but watery character.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 kuphish (351) - Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA - NOV 13, 2011
Swing top bottle from P&M. Clear, copper body with a diminishing white head. A little grape and caramel in the nose with some faint woodsieness. Flavor has more candy-ish caramel with some fruity esters. Little hop flavor. Medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Sweet up front, especially compared to other alts. Mild bitterness. Grape flavor lingers in the finish. Overall not bad, but pretty meh.
