COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Imperial Cascadian Dark Ale
Imperial Cascadian is the NW style of this brew. This is a very well balanced, extremely hoppy black ale. It is very reminiscent of a winter ale. Armored fist is a collaboration beer brewed with the good ole boys from Three Floyd’s Brewing out of Chicago.

From notes. First reviewed 1/26/2011. Served on tap in a goblet at Three Floyds. This pours a maple brown, nearly mahogany, with an eggshell colored head that retains nicely. Strangely light appearance for a double CDA, though. Wet dog, gym socks, ad barnyard in the nose. Too strong and terrible. The first whiff made me tear up and want to cry. I almost cannot move past this point.** It is tough to ignore the smell, but I am doing the best I can. There is some sweet molasses up front. Sage, tons of cloves and all spice, lots of funk follow. The sweet and spicy flavors blend in with spicy and earthy hops. A little alcohol bite. Medium bodied, which was, again, light for what I was expecting. Candy sweet on the lips, and it leaves some hop resin. I could not finish this. The smell was just too overwhelming. **Note - the aroma was bad enough that I handed it to my friend, who agreed it was awful. Before even having a sip, I asked our server if something had gone wrong. He smelled it and told me that was how it was supposed to smell. So, I moved on.

Tasted on tap at the 12th Bistro Double IPA Festival on 2/11/2011. This Black IPA pours a medium brown color from the tap. Large sized beige/tan foamy head. The aroma is caramel, roasty , fruity and sweet. A medium bodied black IPA. The malts are caramel and sweet. Slighlty roasty. The hops are herbal and earthy, and a touch citrusy. Nice balance. A touch sweet but balanced toward the hop bitterness. Easy to drink and a good example fo the CDA/Black IPA. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Draft. Super dark ruby. Hints of chocolate and roasted malts. Pretty solid CDA. Could be more bitter though.

Growler from World Beers. Deep red-brown pour with a short beige head leaving heavy lace. Superb floral, pine and citrus hop nose. Medium body and carbonation. Toffee, baking chocolate and dark-roasted malt make up the malt flavors, while the hops definitely dominate here. Floral hops, citrus and pine resin make up the enticing hop aromas. There is a fruity tartness which develops towards the finish, which is nicely balanced. Best CDA I’ve tried to date, I could drink this every day!

On tap at Apex with mcberko, pours a solid black with an amber tint and small creamy tan head. Aroma of butterscotch, candied sugar, dark fruits, and roasted malts. Flavour of butterscotch, candied sugar, hops, dark fruits and roasted malts. Medium-bodied, roasty finish. Decent.

On tap at Apex in Portland, split with Matts_Property, pours a reddish dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of citrus hops and roasted malts. Flavour is much the same, with a roasted / hoppy finish. ABV is well-hidden. Standard double black IPA.

One kick ass Black IPA. Dark black in color, clear with a thin head. Nice IPA and dark malt aroma. Very intense hops aroma and flavors. Bold and flavorful this was is prime example of a kick ass Black IPA.

Draft @ Apex. Opaque coffee color, off/white head that quickly fades to thin ring and thin lace. Caramel and peppery hops in the aroma, velvety mouthfeel. Subtle peppery hop kick at the end, lots of toast in the finish. Nice CDA, but could be a bit more hoppy.

Nice citrus and pine on top of dark roasted malts, roasted nutty notes, and some tropical fruit as well. Pours black, nice head. The flavor starts with a fruity hops blast moves through roast dark malt notes and continues into pine and dank hops as well as more citrus and a nice note of warming alcohol. Drinks incredibly well while still warming. Great stuff here.

Pretty dark with a beige and un-sustained head. The nose is beautifully dry and hoppy, citrus and pine with some roasted bitterness adding its almost chocolate flair in there too. Smooth and light with a heap of bitterness, plenty of caramel and chocolate maltiness. Definitely one of my favourite CDAs.
