Imperial Cascadian Dark Ale
Imperial Cascadian is the NW style of this brew. This is a very well balanced, extremely hoppy black ale. It is very reminiscent of a winter ale. Armored fist is a collaboration beer brewed with the good ole boys from Three Floyd’s Brewing out of Chicago.

The thing about collabs is that you never know who brought the wood. But since it’s a "NW style" (which could mean anything, given an epic fail as to recipe transparency), I’m thinking Boneyard/Tony Lawrence’s contribution was pretty large. This might be the best black beer out there. That’s saying a lot, given Siren/Stillwater’s When The Light Gose Out (just say yes to the activated charcoal in Hawaiian Black Lava Sea Salt !) and Moonlight’s Death and Taxes.

Dark black, creamy tan head. Had off draft. Nice burnt flavor, roasted malt and coffee. Still cold off draft so alcohol flavor was quite present. Slightly sweet finish and also slightly acidic/sour. Palate is smooth and mildly carbonated. Sneaky strong nice beer.

On tap at the Hop Shop Ballard. Pours near black with a cream brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has creamy dark grains and earthy pine with a light chalky note. Flavor combines creamy dark grains with a slight chalkiness and earthy bitter pine.

Draught@CBC2015. Coppery black colour with a mediumsized off-white head. Aroma is mild roasted notes, some floral and fruity notes along with grass. Flavour is toasted, some fruity, floral and mild resiny notes, mild chocolate malt pushing through as well. Also has some mild notes of alcohol sweetness lurking in the flavour.

On tap @ Chuck’s CD. Pours opaque black with medium creamy mocha head. Aroma is dark roasty malt, solid chocolate notes, then earthy floral dark citrus hops. Taste is clean dark malt, light roastiness, and well-balanced hops on the back. Notes of pine, dark citrus, and earthy hops. Seems much smaller than 10% due to smooth flavor. Although the inherent limitations of the style remain, this is what a CDA should be, the best of an IPA and a dark beer.

Draught @ Mikkeller Bar Victoriagade. Pours translucent black with a frothy mocha head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly malty and fruity with roasted malts, burnt crisp bread, caramel, grapefruit juice, mango, pineapple, moist grass, pine needles, resin, coffee and lemon zest. Taste is sweet, bitter, slightly malty and slightly fruity. Mouthfeel is soft, round, slightly astringent, tiny boozy and medium bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with roasted malts, burnt caramel, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, coffee, moist grass, pine needles, resin, lemon zest and hints of alcohol. Bit too sweet and a bit too strong but nose is top CDA stuff.

Red brown. Aroma caramel malt syrupy. Tastes peachy slight tobacco, rye. Watery body. Not enough roasts.

Tap (TCBW15) (6:4:6-:3:11=3.0-)
Odd aroma. Pungent hops, a nice roast, but no synergy between the two. Ditto the taste - they’re fighting each other. This is just an IPA with added darkness. Good example of why I don’t like the style.
