5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 msylvanus (3) - USA - FEB 20, 2012 does not count
On tap @ Parkway on 16Feb, then again at Red Hot on 19Feb. Seemed slightly thinner, crisper the second time around. Awesome from start to finish. Medium body, lively, astringent, amber, clear, white foam, very reminiscent of Pliny, especially the aroma. Interesting that the older ratings here are just mediocre but all recent are very good - has Boneyard mixed it up a bit? Whatever, it’s great now!
5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 Hoptful (3) - Tigard, Oregon, USA - SEP 23, 2012 does not count
On tap at Max’s Summer Nano-fest in Tigard, at Gigantic Brewing in PDX, and other guest taps around town. This is pure delicious goodness in a glass, the beer for which God invented hops. It delivers a spicy hop wallop, yet is balanced without being sweet, bitter or revealing its high alcohol level. If it weren’t a DIPA with a high ABV, it might be the only IPA I would drink. Boneyard is brewing consistently great beers (except Girl Beer, yuck) and this is their best. I am rating it as perfect across the board as a "pole position" rating--I have simply never had a better DIPA, including Pliny, Double Jack and all the usual suspects. When, if ever, I do, or if Boneyard’s standards slip, I’ll revise the rating accordingly.
4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Theydon_Bois (2957) - The ’Sham, Surrey, ENGLAND - NOV 24, 2012
Tap at Produce Row Cafe, Portland 07/11/12 (Thank’s to Jessie for tracking this fantastic beer down for me !).
Had first sip LBOW ! Bitter hop assualt !!!
Lightly hazed amber with a thin white head which retains well. Good lacing follows.
Nose is a big fuck off pine smash to the nostrils, hops, bitter grapefruit, light mango.
Tastes of bitter grapefruit, pine forward, hops, a dirty great pine kick in the teeth, light mineral tones.
Surprisingly medium in body for double figures ABV with soft carbonatoin leading to a bitter finish.
Excellent DIPA, doesn’t come much better. Would like to try this side by side with Pliny, reckon Pliny may drop a point or two and hop Venom may well rise to the top!
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 BlackEyePA (547) - USA - AUG 21, 2012
super strong. Very hoppy, spicy floral hoppiness. Super malty but balanced. Med body and mouthfeel, creamy has serious heft. Its well crafted. Try it if you like strong IIPA
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 PhillyCraft (1964) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 20, 2013
Fresh growler, poured a vibrant, cloudy, orange shade. Medium sized head and lacing. Carbonation was somewhat soft. Notes are so f’n tangerine and kiwi’d out, tropical juice, light minerals, cheese/garlic, funky, pine, caramel, very dank and tangy. Medium to fuller body. Another knockout from Boneyard.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 danger (2) - - JUL 22, 2012 does not count
Spent a week in Bend, Oregon and had this several times: at the brewery, on tap at local bars, and also in a growler brought back to Canada and shared with friends.
Each time I had it, the beer presented itself slightly differently, but each time was just a fantastic experience. Very fresh, hop-forward DIPA, which is super smooth and easy to drink. I find it differs from other great DIPAs in the mid palette, where a combination of honey suckle and a slightly piney, slightly floral hop flavor comes out, really bringing this beer to the next level for me.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 zizzybalubba (1152) - Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA - MAY 6, 2012
On tap at APEX in Portland, OR. Dark orange pour with a light white head. Very nice pineapple and grapefruit aroma. Citrusy, fruity flavor again of pineapple and grapefruit with a light amount of sweet malt. An amazing DIPA.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 xarcadia (44) - California, USA - DEC 25, 2012
Great hops! Intense, fruity. Mellow finish. This was our favorite at the Concordia Alehouse blind Imperial IPA contest, and it won first place!
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 writerljberg (222) - Oregon, USA - MAR 21, 2013
On tap at Apex
A: Cloudy blood orange. Restful off-white head. Washes the glass.
N: Deliciously full. Spruce needles, pineapple, and mango. Malts add an inviting base. Some onion adds zest.
T: Pure delight. Beep, lush hops lend grapefruit, pineapple, earth, and spruce. Has a pleasant balancing sweetness. Onion and marijuana.
M: Sticky and drying, yet never steps over the line where I tire of it.
O: I’m an unabashed Boneyard lover, and I’m not afraid to admit it. This beer is so expertly balanced, it’s difficult to describe. Or maybe not worth describing because I’m so busy drinking it.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 womencantsail (6882) - Garbage Grove, California, USA - FEB 20, 2013
Orange pour with a white head. Enormous citrus aroma of orange, grapefruit, and orange. Some nice bright pineapple aromas, floral hops, and a bit of pine. Minimal malt sweetness to the flavor, great orange and grapefruit, and some pineapple. Moderate pine flavor with a decent bitterness and a surprisingly dry finish. Awesome stuff.
