COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The latest addition to Boneyard’s growing family of beers – a 14-percent imperial stout, dubbed Suge Knite, and pronounced just like the infamous gangsta rap producer – is the Evander Holyfield of ales: a serious heavyweight. Inspired by another oversize stout, the Dark Lord, from Indiana’s 3 Floyds brewery, with whom Boneyard Brewmaster Tony Lawrence previously collaborated on Boneyard’s Cascadian ale, Armored Fist. Suge Knight is a massive beer that Lawrence said took some real coaxing throughout the brewing process. The result is a near masterpiece that is proving popular with people who might not usually reach for a Russian stout at the end of their shift. Stay stout, Bend.

Oily blackness in the glass. The nose is an almost savory roast with some caramel smoothness and a light hit of boozy burn. A lottle metallic then massively smoky in the mouth. That tinny tang comes back a little in the aftertaste and then a real alcoholic burn in the throat. It’s woody and pretty good but it has a long way to go.

On tap at Back in Black, Brouwers. Pours black with a finger of tan head. Smell is sweet, roasty, and dark fruit. Taste is dark chocolate and coffee, toasty finish. Don’t taste the 14% at all, very drinkable, great.

Black, tan head. Like a slightly weaker World Wide Stout, but this is still quite potent. Roasty malts and port wine, with some dark fruit. Thick. Boozy. Good. Not great.

Draft at brouwers back in black ’12. Pitch black with lasting dark tan head. Pretty sweet up front, toasty marshmallow, caramelized figs, touch of raisin, light coffee and hint of soy. Not as thick in feel as I was anticipating with light but fitting for the beer carbonation. More balanced in flavor, lightly sweet, hint of smoke, long dried fruit, touch of coffee and over roasted nuts. Sneaky 14%. Second time I’ve had this, notes are for the beer I had today, although I recall liking the previous sample a bit more.

On tap at Apex with mcberko, pours a solid black with a creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, roasted coffee and chalk. Flavour of the same, with light licorice and light chilli. Palate is very roasted, medium/full bodied, leaves a dry, roasty aftertaste.

On tap at Apex in Portland, split with Matts_Property, pours a solid black with a creamy beige head. Aroma off chalk, roasted malt, liqueur and licorice. Flavour is quite chalky and roasty with a boozy hit - sort of mutes it. The powdery / chalky element is a bit off-putting, but it’s decently made.

savnac (1467) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - JUL 1, 2011
On tap @ a 10 Below, Bend. Dark brown/black with a small creamy tan head and big boozy legs. Aroma of dark chocolate, licorice, coffee and light smoke. Flavor is semi-sweet chocolate, dark roasted malt, and a vinous alcohol bite. Fullish body, soft carbonation with a very long, dark chocolate finish and a thick, oily mouth feel. Great Imp Stout, very intense and shows a bit of it’s 14%, took a while to drink the goblet, but was great the whole way through.

Growler shared at a recent BA/RB tasting... Poured pitch black with a light brown head. Some roast, smoke, on top of a thick palate. Not totally boozy on the tongue for the ABV. But till hints of whiskey, caramel toasted sugary tones, nutty hazelnuts, coffee and chocolate.
