Bottle. Pours a clear, dark brown appearance with a lasting dark brown head. Lots of CO2, spicy yeasty, candy sugar, caramel, dark fruity aroma. Body is a bit thin. Kind of woody, dark caramel, kind of funky yeasty, light chocolate, somewhat fruity/cherry flavor that dries out a bit on the finish. Booze is hidden pretty well. Not bad.

Pour on tap at Happy Gnome, dark reddish pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of nuts, dark caramel, toffee, slight acid, hints of grass, slight spice notes with a touch of yeast, more bready notes as well. Taste is big bread, caramel, toffee, some slight spice, hints of grass, nuts, finishing fairly sweet.

Happy Gnome Firkin Fest 2012. A brown beer. Belgian yeast and malt in the aroma. Sweet, and true to style. Some dried fruit and Belgian yeast.

Banana nose. Very dark color, which seemed to be more intensely dark than a typical double. The thickness (not to say richness) was also striking at the start. Cherry finish, but I found it more one dimensional and quick at the finish than a great dubbel. (on tap at the Muddy Pig, St. Paul)

750ml bottle from mtjoseph, thanks Mark! Pours a murky, deep brown colored body with some mahogany highlights. Finger-width, foamy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is dark caramels and bready malts with a good amount of yeast. Spicy with a light bubble gum, clove, banana, and a nice raisin dark fruit. A touch of chocolate and light hopping as well. Flavor is similar. A light cocoa with the bready dark caramels up front before a good amount of yeast comes in to balance the malts. Some pepper spice, clove, nuts, raisin, a light banana, and just a touch of bubble gum before this finishes clean, slightly dry, a bit spicy with a light bitterness, and a light malt sweetness. Lengthy aftertaste with just a touch of alcohol warmth following a medium body and an active, medium-high carbonation. Overall, not a bad dubbel. Dark caramels and bread with a touch of cocoa balanced with a nice yeast spice and some raisin dark fruits. Good beer.

750 ml bottle purchased at Zipps in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The pour is a brown golden, with a 1/2 inch off white head. The aroma is dark fruit, honey sweet malt, a light roast character, and ester clove Belgian yeast. The taste is the sweet malt, black cherry fruit, a touch of the faint roast, and the Belgian yeast character. The palate is medium bodied, soft carbonation, and a sweet yeast finish. I am not normally a huge Dubbel fan, though I liked the fruit and yeast character in this one. Both of the Boom Island beers I have tried are solid.

Bottle received as part of a gift from a coworker. Very dark brown pour, spotty carbonation/lacing on top and an aroma of nice banana esters. Flavor is lightly malty raisins, thin body and a slightly sweet mild brown sugar finish. Not a bad beer, no off flavors; but incredibly overpriced when you consider you can’t find better dubbels at the same price or much cheaper.

Guerde (1150) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - APR 28, 2012
(bottle) Pours a clear dark mahogany color with a very large tan head that quickly settles to a medium cap and does not leave much lacing. The aroma smells a little off at first, with plenty of cork scents, must, wet wood, and pears. Smells rather vinous too, and with time, the scent does improve, as the promised banana scent is readily apparent and takes the form of an overripe banana. Chocolate and light roasted malt is also here, which is a welcome addition. The flavor is fairly reminiscent of the aroma, with flavors of banana, bubblegum, chocolate, and plums, which is good enough, but the finish falls a little flat as it takes on a metallic edge with a slight twang. Further warming lessens this, and the finish takes on the form of a yellow cake doughnut. Faint shades of weizenbock show in this beer. Overall, this is a decent take on a Dubbel.

Fairly tasty beer, from this exciting young brewery. A ways off from the actual Belgian ales, but a fine place to start.
