4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Tap. 10 oz. Luxurious dark. Smells of balsamic and dark fruit. Syrupy. Rich, light tart flavor. Finished quickly but smoothly. Reminds of Belgium, which is a good thing for an American beer. Very nice.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JUN 27, 2014 Roasty, malty yeast and perfectly balanced. Pours with a huge head, lots of caramel sweetness and some bitterness for balance. A real treat.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black in color which turns to dark red when held up to light. Smell isn’t anything to write home about but underneath that smell (or lack thereof) is a complex flavor of bubble gum, figs, spices, floral hops, caramel and yeasts. The carbonation is a bit on the heavier side for this type of ale, but it feels crisp and refreshing and is fairly easy to drink for this style of beer. Overall, it’s not perfect but it still tastes damn good. It’s nice to see a small start-up brewery pull off such a complex style of beer which mostly favorable results.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap the the Republic in Minneapolis.
Clear but very dark brown body. Good head that has reasonable retention.
Unusual in that there’s a fair amount of vanilla in the nose and flavor.
The aroma is a bit sweet and may bring a bakery to mind, but the flavor is a more bitter than sweet. Less fruity than average for style,
O: Recommended, if unusual version of the style.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Murky brown color with small lingering off white head. Aroma - sour vineous notes and some sweet malts. Taste - those same sour notes, brown sugar, spicy esters and caramel malts. The sourness sets this apart from some of the other Dubbels I’ve had, but I lik it. Prickly carbonation. A very nice Dubbel.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 ml bottle thanks to Skyview, nice brew, thanks Bob. Color is a deep garnet with bubbly, spiderweb lacing. Aroma shows Belgian candy syrup, plum, figs and Christmas spice.
The flavor is spot on for the style. Dark fruit and yeast upfront with a nice earthy caramel malt base. Spice and pumpernickel bread with a medium body. Soft carbonation giving a smooth, creamy texture. Solid example of the style, nice job from this brewery!

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Banana nose. Very dark color, which seemed to be more intensely dark than a typical double. The thickness (not to say richness) was also striking at the start. Cherry finish, but I found it more one dimensional and quick at the finish than a great dubbel. (on tap at the Muddy Pig, St. Paul)

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap - this is a good enough dubbel. Spicy is the main take away for me along with the malt bomb on the base.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ml bottle purchased at Zipps in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The pour is a brown golden, with a 1/2 inch off white head. The aroma is dark fruit, honey sweet malt, a light roast character, and ester clove Belgian yeast. The taste is the sweet malt, black cherry fruit, a touch of the faint roast, and the Belgian yeast character. The palate is medium bodied, soft carbonation, and a sweet yeast finish. I am not normally a huge Dubbel fan, though I liked the fruit and yeast character in this one. Both of the Boom Island beers I have tried are solid.
