Brigadier (1217), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Aug 11, 2006 Pre-Great Taste sampling at 1FastSti’s house
I don’t remember when this one got opened but it could have been the capstone
of the night if we didn’t have some seriously amazing beers lined up for
later. As it was, I think was the second best thing opened on the night which
says something considering the lineup. This was a 2000 vintage brought by
MrFacto.
Aroma / Appearance - There is only one thing that you pick up when you
take a sniff - raspberries. However, it is not a one dimensional aroma but
more like Raspberry Tart with lots of nuances. Underneath it were strawberry,
vanilla yogurt and tartnesss. The ruby red body looked beautiful and inviting.
A brief reddish head made an appearance before settling into a thin film that
migrated around the top of the pour.
Flavor / Palate - Sour raspberries dominate the flavor, but once again
not in a one-dimensional way. It is almost as if someone had captured the
essence of fresh from the vine raspberries (seeds and all) in a liquid form.
The aftertaste is very tart with absolutely no sweetness at all. This is a
real lambic, not a sugary Lindemans. Perhaps the best lambic I have tasted,
it now forces me to seek out some of the Cantillons for comparison’s sake. MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Aug 11, 2006 Dark brown pour w/ red hughes and a small thick white head. Super sweet aroma lots of berries and dried suars.. this smells really good. Well carbonated and lightly sour palate. Flavor is nicely tart w/ lots of berries, fruits, & sweetness. Very dry light grassy finish. Very good lambic.
Thanks to Matt for sharing. Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA Aug 11, 2006 Huge thanks to Engelsmann for hooking me up with this fine brew. BRING ON THE FUNK! Pours a slightly hazy brown/slightly purple color, small white head. Aroma is very musty, slight funk, and full of raspberry goodness. Flavor is tart and pleasantly raspberry. Almost no funk, holy cow. Perfectly sour, not medicine, just very very nice drinking. 6 years old? Who says fruit lambics cant be aged?! fiulijn (7150), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Jul 17, 2006 Vintage 2000, 6 years old, corked bottle Hazy amber-ruby color. Clear aroma of raspberries and flowers. The taste is fruity, medium sourness, some astringency, some sugars, some tannins. The final is balanced. An elegant brew. DougShoemaker (2855), Toronto, Canada Jul 15, 2006 1997!!
Majestic raspberry nose, hazy brown, floaties, seeds too. Full raspberry flavour, like a compote. Tart, sweet, dry yet refreshing. Fantastic! Thanks for sharing Dave Steen! Radek Kliber (3921), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada Jul 7, 2006 Vintage 1997. Dark, stormy with black seeds, hazy amber. Superb fruit raspberry nose, juicy, organic garden. Nose is gentle touched with sour breeze just makes this nose so much fuller. After sip you will notice soft fruity sweetness, with raspberry so well carved and preserved here. Finis was a bit short witch could be due to its age. Still great fruit drink. GregClow (2493), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 2, 2006 Bottle shared with the usual suspects - 1997 vintage. Courtesy of Dave. Hazy, dull brown with tons of floaties and a very wispy head. Fantastic aroma of overripe raspberries, funky yeast, wood and a bit of cheese. Flavour starts with a surprisingly fresh raspberry flavour, with is quickly joined by some must and funk, leading to a lingering tart & acidic finish. Mouthfeel is thick and sticky, obviously well aged. Very fine stuff - thanks for sharing, Dave! tupalev (2605), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 2, 2006 1997 Vintage, shared with a great crew on Canada Day. Dark brown, still head. Really nice musty berry aroma - amazing. Incredible taste - all musty malt, vinegar, sourness, lots of berries that tasted fresh, not nine years old, Almost of berry seed like bitterness. Lovely linger of berries. Complex, yet instantly drinkable, this has aged very well and was a pleasure to drink.
