Kriek Boon is a traditional Belgian Lambic fruit-beer. It is brewed according to the traditional Lambic style of spontaneous fermentation. Only fresh cherries (25%) are used. Kriek Boon is slightly sweet, with the surprising natural fragrance of sourcherries and almonds. With only 4% of alcohol it is a perfect summer beer.

Editor’s note: Was 5%.

Isn’t hard to rate a lambic? I’d take one over just about any other style, but I’ll rate this one against others, so the score is a bit low. It’s a complex beer from top to bottom--reddish in the glass, turning to amber in the shallows; whitish head that recalls sodas. Sour cherry nose, but is that a hint of leathery malt? On the palate, the cherry is the first, tart note, then the lambic rushes in, sour and lip smacking, but it finishes gently with definite raisin-y malt notes. I mark it down for being slightly understated to my palate.

2012 bottle. Looks smells and tastes like cherry soda. They shouldn’t call this a kriek

Ok done. Taste fresh cherry, not additive flavour. Not my kind of lambic, like much more gueuze.

Sample at Wild Wild Beer Fest. A bit on the sweet side. Almost like a raspberry dessert. Lots of fruit and a little more tart on the finish.

0.5L bottle. Rubby body with tiny pink foam. Fresh, pleasant cherry aroma. Natural cherry, overcooked cherry jam, caramel candy. Very nice Kriek. Everything is excellent. Nice caramel syrup and overcooked sugar mouthfeel.

375 ml bottle (2013). Pours a clear ruby red, just like a cream soda with a silky pinkish head. Aromas of sour cherry pie. Taste is sour cherry but also moderately sweet. Creamy, moderate to heavy carbonation, and medium length sour finish. Pleasant summer beer but I wouldn’t want more than one owing to the sweetness.
