375ml bottle (thanks FatPhil) 2010 vintage. Slightly hazy, golden color. Medium size, yellowish head, stays. Dry yeast, cheese, roasted chestnuts, oily, almonds and fruity notes in aroma. Acidic, dry yeast, straw, hay, tobacco in taste. Crisp mouthfeel. Old hay in aftertaste. Alcohol is well hidden.

Vintage 2009. Hazy orange-yellow color. Aroma: sour, barnyard, leather, sour fruit and light lemon. Taste: moderate sour, dry, tartness and oak shades, malt, apple and lemon.

Amber semitransparent color with good foam head in the right glass. The smell is most temptingly tempting (sour). The taste is indeed sour with a heavier sugary aftertaste. The carbonation is marvelous. Great beer, with some slight problems (alcohol content, sugar content).

Vintage 2010. Orange color with lots of bubbles and big white head. Funk, apples, citrus, wood, sweat, yes, very characterful. Dry and a perfect amount of sourness. A bit foamy carbonation in the mouth. Delicious. The ABV is very noticeable (even gives an illusion of malt sugar in the end) but it fits the character. A heavy Gueuze, but one to be appreciated!

37,5cl bottle from Warners at the Bay. Pours cloudy yellow with a big head that quickly dies. Slightly geuzy, fruity nose, apples and grapes. All that also shows in the taste, which is accompanied by a lively carbonization. Slightly sour, in a good way.

38cl. bottle (375ml.). An upgraded version of the Oude Geuze Boon. Higher in alcohol, but with the typical "gueuze" aspects. Geuze as it should be: Orange look, fading foam, sour taste, dry mouth.

Litet vitt huve som som försvinner snabbt. Små grumlig fin glansig smått gyllene bärnstensfärgad öl med fantastisk sur doft & sur smak. Syrliga höslövskompott. Wunderbar!

Classic ’oude geuze’, bottle of two years old. Actually the continuation of an old ’substyle’ of geuze, where much more old lambic than young lambic is applied, so a bit different (also in its relatively high ABV). Beautifully orangey peach blonde colour, clear with fine, ’champenoise’ fizz supporting a medium, snow white, opening head remaining stable around the edges. Powerful lambic aroma displaying the maturity and nobility of ’malse’ old lambic, suggestions of lemon peel, redcurrant, unripe pears and green plums, sweat but in a ’noble’ kind of way, barnyard, sour yoghurt, wet wood, sorrel, leather (Brett), cellar dust, dry white wine, field flowers... Very complex and extremely elegant, as well as appetizing. Taste follows the aroma perfectly: an extremely refreshing acidity, lemon, sour red berries, starfruit, with minerals in the background and a pointy, champagne-like, fizzy carbonation just as it should be in this style; a ’brut’ dryness is in perfect balance with the fruitiness, remaining firmly in place without becoming wildly estery, and making room for a deep background wheat sourishness and a gentle, faintly sweetish bready maltiness, upon which the complex structure of the old lambic is built: tart lactic acidity joining the initial lemon acidity, woody tannins creeping in only to intensify in the finish, and of course the leathery, drying, funky Brettanomyces effect; finishes long, woody and mouth-watering dry, with lingering tartness, a subtle hint of lingering bready malt sweetishness and strong oaky tannins, as well as a late and brief hop bitterishness, adding further structure and complexity. Somewhat different indeed, but interesting in letting the reserved, mature funkiness of the old lambic come to full glory. In being somewhat more ’easy-going’ and mellow than the regular Oude Geuze (or, for that matter, most old geuzes from other producers), this could mistakenly be interpreted as a ’simple’ and introductory example of the style, but I think this is to be fully appreciated only by those who have a thorough understanding of the difference between young and old lambic. Besides this, this was the first ever ’oude geuze’ I tasted, many years ago, so it is good to revisit it now, after years of gathering knowledge of the beer world. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
