4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 bierkoning (8099) - La Tropica, NETHERLANDS - MAY 7, 2004
2000. Deep red color, pinkish lasting head. Aroma and flavor have cherry (off course) but certainly not a overwhelming sticky cherry sweetness, almonds and pepper. Only a hint of sweetness, problably from the fruit only. Somewhat dusty. Some oaky and almondy bitterness. Complex quality kriek, maybe a bit more refined as Cantillon.

Red, very clear body. Pink fizzy head, mostly lasting, virtually no lace. Sourish aroma. A dominating soapy aroma, combined with the typical gueuze-aroma (which is as a matter of fact a little bit more at the background of the aroma. Initial cherry flavour. Sour, long finish. Fizzy mouthfeel.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Christian (8548) - Odense, DENMARK - APR 14, 2004
Cloudy, dark pink with lots of bubbles and a lively head, white with a hint of pink.
Aroma of cherry with some earth, wood and lemon to it.
Flavour is initially overwhelming acidy, followed by a more rounded taste of cherry, wood and vanilla. Long pleasant (wood/sour) aftertaste.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 BBB63 (5023) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - MAR 21, 2004
First up in my “Kriek, not just for breakfast ” tasting: (Vintage 2000) Pours to a slightly hazy ruby hue with a small almost creamy pink head and above average lace. The aroma hints of cherries, black currents, almond, horse blanket yeast esters, mild port cheese and oak wood. The taste starts tart with vinegar/lemon like sourness. Displays undertones of wood, yeast characteristics, light spice, and hint of vanilla. The mouthfeel is dry, some tannin, but not overpowering. Overall, one of the better Krieks I have enjoyed recommended if you could find a bottle.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DanielBrown (2717) - Birmingham (via Leicester), West Midlands, ENGLAND - JAN 20, 2004
UPDATED: NOV 14, 2004 Bottle, from The Offie, Leicester. Rated back to back against Boon Kriek (2001). This was a 2000 vintage. Salmon pink colour, no head, and no carbonation. Glowing and hazy. Quite subtle aroma - tart berry. Sour taste, but not eyewateringly so. Very odd ash aftertaste, with some burnt plastic. Mushy, cherry taste - probably morello, and some mystery floating particles. I liked this, but not as much as its’ younger brethren: I guess I’m just a sucker for sweeter beers, with a thicker mouthfeel. RE-RATE - t’Waagstuk, Antwerp (5/11/04) - this is a quality Kriek, tastier than last time I tried it.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 Kinz (2694) - Glen Allen, Virginia, USA - JAN 2, 2004
Beer 13 of Belgium trip, last one at 'T Brugs Beertje. The server gave me a big smile when I ordered this one, nodding her head with approval. Good sign. While I had my back turned, she opened the cork about 3 inches from my ear, giving me a mild heart attack, and amusing my wife tremendously. 2000 bottling. All sediment caked on one side of bottle, clearly stored with care. Medium red, very pretty light pink head. Aromas of sour cherry and horseblanket. Bit of bite on the palate still despite the age of the beer. Flavor was of sour cherries and horseblanket as well, but this beer had a depth of flavor that was hard to really capture in words. Wow.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Kåstå (1221) - Mol, BELGIUM - DEC 9, 2003
[Vintage 2000] Crystal clear ruby red beer with a lovely medium pink head. Cherry and wood aroma. Light bitter, dry and sour taste. Very nice mild cherry taste. Dry tart finish. A very good kriek.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ungstrup (23922) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - OCT 8, 2003
[Vintage 1998, 5 years old] Sour wild fermented aroma. The color is a clear deep red and it has a bubbly pink fast disappearing head. All the sediment in mine had settled on the cork (must have been stored upside down) - I think that's why it was clear. The flavor is very sour - like a lemon - combined with a weak sweetness and a strong flavor of wild fermentation. It has hints of metal and cherries. It finishes on a dry woody oak note combined with some sourness, that lingers for a long time. A great kriek.
