Oude Kriek Boon is one of the finest examples of the 100% spontaneous fermentation fruit-Lambic style. 400 g of wild cherries per litre are fermented together with a blend of young and old Boon Lambic that has been aged in oak casks. After clarification, the Oude kriek is bottled and refermented. It is unsweetened, unfiltered, unpasteurised and has no artificial flavourings, preservatives or colourings added. Brewed in Lembeek, the village that gave Lambic its name. Pour slowly in a flute glass without disturbing the yeast sediment in the bottle. Cheers !

Bottle. Dark red with sediment. Dark sour cherries, funk, barnyard in the aroma. Body is lightish. Dark cherries, funk and malts. Cleansing acidity, but not that sour. A bit of woody notes. Nice darker old kriek.

Small corked bottle, 2012 on the neck. Pours a ruby red body with lots of floating sediment, small pinkish head. Aroma has ripe cherries and some usual Lambic notes. Pretty sweet taste with cherries and cherry stones. More sweet than tart and therefore not very complex. About a year ago I would have complained that itís too sour but now my preferences have changed.

Beautiful dark red color, with nice pin head, lasting quite long. Smell is cherry, wood and some acid. Taste is sour, woody, and of course fruity, everything well balanced, not too sour. Dry mouthfeel. Great thirst quencher.

Deep red colour. Smells a little like red wine. Comes off a little sour. But goes more into bitterness after a moment. Hard to describe the taste. Fruity. Very fresh and crisp feel. Not my cup og tea, but definatly worth a try.

Keg at Brewdog. Barman says this is wine barrel aged. Reddy purple, opaque hazy, small foamy pink head. Aroma is deep dirty cherry, red wine. Body is medium, tingly carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is rounded with kirsch cherry, touches of sherry, some honey - but not overly sweet, touch of oak. This is lovely.

Vintage 2012.

2012 bottle. I really loved the cherry aroma when opened the bottle. Pours nice dark pink head which then quickly disappears. Lambic is quite sour but there is a strong hint of cherries. It is pretty strong for a kriek but nice to drink in spring/summer. BTW best before is 2033 - yes, in 20 years :-)

This is by far the best of its kind. But to enjoy it requires first that you are OK with the concept of mixing fruit and traditional beer and second that you can enjoy a Lambic/Gueuze (although the latter appears only as aftertaste). The most interesting thing about this beer is the flavours of wild cherries the way they present themselves in a completely dry, crisp brew. At first, I thought I maybe missed body and depth, but on second thought, this is he character of the Lambic, and it compensates for that with a long, pleasant aftertaste. One could imagine to add sugar or brew it differently, but that would kill off these unique aromas. And the cherry would become, well, plain cherry. Having said that, it is clear that every concept has its limits and uses. Although this beer works fine with food, it is hard to imagine a course that would be lifted further like only a full bodied brew can achieve. But drink this alone in the winter, and you are suddenly taken away to your very best summer memories.

2012 bottle @home. Pours bright red with a creamy pink head. Aroma is a little sour, chery, but also a sttronger "biting" aroma I canít name. Taste is sour, little chery. Some sour bitterness in the finish.
