3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 fletchfighters (76) - AUSTRALIA - MAY 15, 2012
Nice Black IPA. Pours a dark muddy cola and settles near black. Nice mocha colored head. nice looking body.
Lots of tropical fruits in the nose. passion fruit, grapefruit and pavlova. Not a huge amount of darkness noticeable but that is Ok.
Taste is tropical fruits and faint backing of chocolate, roast and coffee. Not that big but workable
Palate is high carbonation and light bodied. Get bits of a metallic pineapple, lemon, and pine.
Overall a nice black IPA. Well done beer and Australia keeps doing this style quite well as opposed to the rest of world.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Brenhophead (216) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - MAY 6, 2012
330mL bottle, pours black with a big tan head and an amazing sweet tropical fruit and milk chocolate aroma.. i cant wait to try it. Perfect carbonation on the tip of the tongue then a big bitter hop resin hit and on the back end a sweetness. Amazing beer, bootleg has peaked my interest.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 ALLOVATE (1708) - Butler, WA, AUSTRALIA - AUG 4, 2011
If I’m going to cross the void into the netherworld of Black IPA’s it might as well be with a local. Tried this one just on cool. Cap came off with a violent burst of escaping gas and as the beer rose up the neck I quickly jerked it into the snifter. Pours very lively, more head than beer, and retains it this way so chewing it off was the only option. A mammoth billowing plume of tan atop an opaque, black body that has just a smidgeon of brown shaded into the shallows. Pine needles, stinging nettles, stripped pinewood, molasses and treacle, a lot of grapefruit and rose water and just a tickle of roasted cacao beans waft forth from the glass. Hop dominated palate, a little rough and rugged and discernibly dry. Annoyingly bubbly, effervescent but nothing a few heavy swirls of the glass couldn’t fix. Resinous, raw hops, soft vanillin and strawberry notes, some peach, big bitter peak and drop off in the swallow. Woody, pine needles and nettles, leafy, acrid herbs dust and earth linger long in the mouth. Layers of ash, burnt wood and bitter cacao beans develop late into drinking. Unusually refreshing even though I know it’s haphazardly rough and unbalanced. I like it and I don’t know why!? (33cL, Cellarbrations Carlisle)
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 maneliquor (1188) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUL 27, 2011
UPDATED: JAN 15, 2012 Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours a very dark, muddy brown with a huge beige head. A load of citrus on the nose with a slight chocolate malt note coming through. Taste is unexpected. Lots of smoke and tar with citrus all the way round the palate. Lots of cocoa coming and going. A good beer, quite unique compared to most black ipa’s
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 bluevegie (2926) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUL 8, 2011
More of a dark muddy brown body rather than black with a short off-white head. Roasted / burnt characters are a shade more prominent than the hop notes, not a standout but easily drinkable.
