More often than not, most high alcoholic beers possess astringent spirity flavours, detracting from the other aspects of the beer. The reverse is true for the Raging Bull. At 7.1% alc./vol., the Bull begins with the intense malty flavours ranging from the crystal flavour and all its diversity to the coffee flavours of the roasted barley. A slight bitterness is apparent from the Pride of Ringwood hops but the main essence remains with the intense warming body structure. The Bull finishes with a resounding sweetness which, like chocolate, begs for another mouthful.

Bottle (330ml). Poured dark ruby brown with a decent sized, rocky, tanned head which was average lasting. Aroma was of rich toffee with toasted malts, dusty chocolate, buttery caramel, currents and raisins. Flavour was of black coffee with a moderate bitterness, roasted chocolate malts, sultana’s, dried figs, some salt and liquorice in the finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation, a dry/slightly creamy mouthfeel, thick texture (but not overly so) and a good finish.

Bottle -- Dark, dark ruby red with quite active carbonation. Generous beige head with OK retention and lacing. Aroma has roasted malt and rich dark fruit with some subtle smokey notes. Creamy medium palate, although with some wateriness as you get closer to the bottom of the glass. The flavour is perhaps fairly flat for a porter, without as much complexity as I’d expect for the style, but still very pleasant, with more smokiness and rich dark fruit. There’s some alcohol warmth towards the end. Not at all bad.

330ml bottle at Australian Hotel, Sydney. I may as well make this my 50th rate mainly because it was probably one of the better beers i’ve tried at the Australian. Rich nose full of roasted and burnt malts and dark chocolate. Pours a near-opaque black body with a bit of diminishing tan lace. Body is dense, with plenty of rich dark chocolate and toasted malts, with hints of coffee and dark fruits. Finishes quite dry and slightly chalky, alcohol is quite well hidden. Don’t get many big porters made here in Australia, a welcome suprise this one.

Viscous dark red stuff with an offwhite head. smells of crystal malt and toast and not much else. in the mouth an extremely hefty, simplistic and sweet chocolatey flavour with no bitterness or yeast acidity to balance. heavy going and quite a boring beer for the ABV. but nothing actively wrong with it technically speaking and i have no doubt they made it exactly how they wanted it to taste - big and fat and dark brown and kind of stupid. the beer equivalent of a black labrador.

Rich and smoky burnt malt nose. Pours very dark with a tan head. The flavour continues with the rich smokiness, adding notes of licorice, coffee beans, and peat. Finish contains a lingering alcohol warmth and some coffee grounds. Not too shabby.

mmm chocolate, mmm beer, mmm chocolate. This is a strange one, it is a perfect winter beer with heaps of chocolate, burnt malt, coffee flavours. Just enough bitterness to offset the sweetness. I think there is perhaps an ounce or so too much chocolate grain though since there is some tannic dryness in the aftertaste which spoils the party a bit. That said though, if i were to drink and enjoy this rather than analyse, i’d probably not notice. It carries the 7% quite well too.
