Aroma is huge on anise with a little malt also evident. Taste is anise, pear, caramel, and then acrid burnt malt and its associated bitterness take over and crowd out the other flavors. The burnt flavor in this gets toned down as it warms, but it still sits precariously close to completely ruining the beer. Medium-thin mouthfeel, creamy, an above-average length finish that is semi-dry. Overall, fairly enjoyable, albeit not spectacular.

Aroma of licorice with a hint of coffee. Nice sweet burnt coffee flavours dominate with a long finish. bluevegie (2233), Perth, Australia

Notice the star anise straight up in the aroma but I was looking for it. The star anise is also noticeable in the taste but fortunately not as dominant, mouthfeel was good with the body not too full, some cocoa, coffee and burnt notes as well. kook (2034), Perth, Western Australia, Australia
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Sep 7, 2004 Pours deep black with medium lasting tan head. Aroma of liquorice, smoke and roasted coffee. Smooth thin-medium mouthfeel. Sweet malty caramel start with a dry roast bitter finish. A little dissapointing in my opinion. Nemo (100), Fremantle, Australia

| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | May 17, 2004 Inoffensive but not something I’d want to sit down and nurse with loving care either. Good coffee undertones and a roasty, malty aftertaste, but give me a Cascade Special Stout anyday. Betty (234), Walgett, NSW, Australia

I remember this coffee taste from Taverners. Good stuff though, some freshness. One of the better Australian stouts I've had. motelpogo (4399), Plzen, Czech Republic
