COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This, our new Ale, is based on the traditional style brewed in the U.K. The initial bitterness is quite distinctive but not so overpowering that other flavours are masked. The bitterness smooths off to reveal malty molasses flavours which, due to its sweetness, offsets and balances the bite of the bittering Pride of Ringwood and Willamette hops. It is copper in colour, floral in aroma and lightly carbonated, making it a pleasant drink for all occasions. INTERNATIONAL BEER AWARDS – SILVER ’01, '02.

330 ml bottle - Dark reddish brown with a tan head. Thin to medium bodied with light to medium carbonation. Dark roasted malts with a slight nutty/coffee taste, and a faint hint of molasses and charcoal/ash. A low to medium bitterness throughout.

Bit messy and unpredictable, the Bootleg range. You can’t accuse their beers of being carbon copies of the styles they emulate, but the results are at least interesting. This one was clear brown with a fair head and reeked of coffee beans. Very intense for a 4%abv brown ale. Also in the mix were drinking chocolate powder and some mint. The aroma raised expectations of something full flavoured and robust. Alas no. Milky coffee notes dominated but it went AWOL in the mid-palate and finished abruptly. The carbonation was soft, verging on flat, which seems to be a feature of the bottled range. Drinkable but a bit muddled. (Coz’s Ashfield RB get-together 07. Thanks Coz for this one.)

Bottle. Rusty caramel and some stoutish nutty flavours. KInd of wanted to like it but it just muddled its way to a rather unpleasant finish.

Bottle -- A deep brown brew with a huge tan head and lots of cabonation. Caramel/Chocolate aroma. Watery mouthfeel. Roasted maltiness. Strangely sharp bitter aftertaste. It’s OK but I probably won’t buy it again.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2008 Nicely made porter style. Cola-like in appearance but poor head retention. Sweet chocolate nose, feels grainy. Less heavy in the mouth as the chocolate and roast notes are subtle but probably in keeping with the style. In line with most Oz peers but overpriced at $4.

11 Apr 2006 - Sweet fruit malt hop aroma. Dark brown colour, good head and good suds lacing. Simple roasted malt flavour. Thick, bitter finish and roasted malt aftertaste.

pours with a great white head over the malty brown beer. Beer is quite well balance with a predominance of chocolate grains leadin the initial taste with a slight sour/bitter aftertaste. Is perhaps a little thin, but at the same time is true to it’s aim of emulating the british way of making beer.

Dark crimson with a light brown head. Aroma is sweet and fresh with some chocolate malt. The beer is great up to this stage.. but thats where it ends. The mouthful is thin, and the roasted malts are far too strong in the palate, leaving an aftertaste similar to eating chocolate malt straight out of the sack. The hops are subtle, and bitterness is low. Unimpressive

UPDATED: JUL 4, 2005 Maybe my trouble is that I had this from a bottle and not from the keg, but I was very disappointed. I cannot believe that this won any awards based on my tasting experience. Poured very over-carbonated, fizzy with a big head that sunk to nothing quickly. Dark brown and clear, some roasted malt aromas. Sweet palate, but very watery with too much caronation, some nutty chocolate notes, but I had to really search for these traits among the malt. I must have had a bad bottle because nobody else seems to have had a similar experience.
