Black Phoenix melds rich bold coffee with the smokey flavors of chipotle peppers, giving it just a touch of heat. To insure the freshest coffee available, we had our local Orange County friends, Kean Coffee, custom roast a batch for us. Notes of chocolate complement this complex and bold stout. This special release will only be available in limited quantities so enjoy it while it lasts.

On tap at the taproom. A next to black one. A small beige head on top. Roasted aroma with some coffee and chocolate. Soft on the palate, semi-dry, with a pleasant carbonation. Roasted flavor with coffee, chocolate and some chipotle that burns lightly. Pleasant finish. The chipotle actually lifts this beer to a high level. 130812

Bottle:   Super deep brown, moderate frothy beige head, spotty lacing.   Soft chocolate and roasted malts on the nose.   Hint of chili pepper.   Smooth moderately bitter chocolate and roasted malts on the tongue.   Some heat from the peppers, or at least it seems that way.   My lips have a slight tingle to it.   Very smooth for a moderate body and mouthfeel.   A little milky stout like finish.   Light sweetness, not real bitter.   The peppers add a neat aspect to this brew.   Tasty!

Deep dark brown coloured body with a ruby and strong violet tint and a thinnish, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of coffee, milk, cream, earth, caramel, peat and a little oak - very nice and complex - even in the nose. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong earthy malts up front with some coffee and chocolate noticeable, a lot of milk and creamy notes tucked in with quite a bit of sugars, all caramelised. Aftertaste shows a good complexity with some alcohol, oak, vanilla, toffee and some slight burn from chiles. Overall, a nice and strong beer that shows well and lingers for a while! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from BevMo (Mission Valley) in San Diego, California on 08-June-2013 for US$5.49 sampled at home in Washington on 14-July-2013.

22oz bottle. Pours black with no head. Both the coffee and chipotle flavors are very subdued. Smoke, oak, sweet malt as well. I think I got a bad bottle. Not much carbonation and a little tart which I don't think is right. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Not a bad stout. Pours a dark chocolate color and leaves a brownish head. Has an aroma of chocolate and coffee with a hint of spice. Taste is much the same. An initial kick of spice due to the chipotle followed by notes of chocolate and coffee.

Gorgeous color in the glass. Chocolate, coffee and toasted malt on the nose and palate. However, what I love about this beer is its elusive heat from the chipotle. Serve this beer too cold and you'll miss out on the spice, but let it warm up just a little, and you will be in chipotle heaven: not so spicy that it limits its audience, but definitely a beer any hot sauce aficionado would love. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a deep black color with coffee and spice aroma. Taste is spicy because the chipotle pepper comes through. After the swallow, a mild coffe taste that seems to be overpowered by the spicyness. A different type of beer that was overall okay.

Deep black pour with a very light, off white head. Nice, coffee aroma. Yum!
