Black Phoenix melds rich bold coffee with the smokey flavors of chipotle peppers, giving it just a touch of heat. To insure the freshest coffee available, we had our local Orange County friends, Kean Coffee, custom roast a batch for us. Notes of chocolate complement this complex and bold stout. This special release will only be available in limited quantities so enjoy it while it lasts.

Pours very dark with a half o finger head. Aroma is smokey, coffee, some chocolate but not too much chipotles. In the taste I get some roasted coffee, smoke and a hint of chipotles in the end but not overpowering. No alcohol feel on this one. The body is medium to light, more like a Porter that a Stout. Overall, is a good beer but needs more complexity. More Coffee and chipotles would do it for me.

Bottled: unk Pours black, and has a rim of light tan foam and quite a bit of clarity. Smells of herbal hops, some some, some soily dust, bits of coffee and some cardboard. Taste is empty, watered down stout with toasted and roated malts, some coffee, a little too much smoke flavor, some hints of coconut and weedy. Mouth is empty with alittle too hi carb and an off dry finish. Okay beer. My wife really dug it so she drank most of the bottle. Serving type: bottle 09-14-2012

Nice cola brown color with off white ring. Lots of chocolate and heat in the nose. Toasty malts, chilis, and bitter coffee. Pretty well balanced. A little to carbonated for me.

Bottle pour. Great coffee aroma blended with a kick of heat at the end. A near perfectly blended coffee pepper stout. Ha!

Aroma is initially very toasty buy as it warms the chipotle becomes rather noticeable. Light coffee note that was stronger when the beer was cold. Medium low chocolate aromas. Pours dark brown, almost black with a moderately thick tan head that has decent retention but does end up disappearing to the sides. No lacing or legs. Flavor has an initial sweet chocolate note that turns more toasty. Mid palate you get a nice coffee note, not too strong but instead more of a background note. The finish has a bit of chocolate and a light chipotle flavor. Some lingering spice in the finish - not too strong but definitely noticeable. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth, though there is some warmth from the peppers. Overall a fairly well balanced stout that is on the smaller side compared to what most people release these days. The chipotle is well balanced and adds background flavor and aroma without kicking your palate’s ass. The coffee is a bit on the faint side for my preferences.
