COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black Phoenix melds rich bold coffee with the smokey flavors of chipotle peppers, giving it just a touch of heat. To insure the freshest coffee available, we had our local Orange County friends, Kean Coffee, custom roast a batch for us. Notes of chocolate complement this complex and bold stout. This special release will only be available in limited quantities so enjoy it while it lasts.

Pours a mostly opaque black with a smallish beige ring of stringy-lacing head. Has a nice sweet dark roasted malty nose with a hint of chiles, dark chocolate and smoke. Starts with pretty good fullness and a chewy dark caramel and roasted malty sweetness well balanced with some fresh piny hops and dark chocolate before a slightly lingering peppery, mildly warming finish. A pretty unique, fairly complex and well-balanced brew.

I’ve tried 2 other beers from Bootleggers, Black Tuesday and Chocasauraus Rye, and this orange County Brewery does not disappoint. The Aroma is coffee and Chocolate roasted malts. On second inhale hints of cocoa powder, mild roasted chili’s and real mild hops piney scent come thru with the coffe and roasted malts. Thin light brown head that that dissapears in a hurry. It is very dark. I held it up next to one of the flood lights in my kitchen and still could not see through it. As for the taste, it is almost exactley like it smells I can’t even taste the alcohol. The chili is noticeable as an aftertaste but its more of a mild tingle on the back of your throat. As for the mouth feel It’s not thin as some may suggest (think a little less than Oatmeal Stout). Overall I’d say this beer is top notch. I am just hopping to find it closer to home next time.

Bottle. Smells like coffee, chalkboard, chocolate. Pours thick dark black brown with a tan head. Incredible taste, full of complexity. Maltiness of the stout, coffee, chocolate, and a finish of subtle chipotle. Long lasting finish - one of my favorite beers.

Pours a thin brownish black. No head present, aroma of coffee and muddled peppers. Taste follows, nothing amazing but interesting. I'm glad I got to try this. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Deep black pour with a very light, off white head. Nice, coffee aroma with a strong, spicy aroma. Roasted chocolate as well. Nice, coffee taste. Ends with a good bite. The second beer I have had with chipotle spice and I love it.

Gachupines (494) - USA - MAR 28, 2012
Black with a tan head. Aroma is roasted coffee with slight spice notes. Flavor is fairly big coffee with a slightly bittersweet finish. Pepper is not as noticeable in the taste, a slight burn in the aftertaste is about it. Not bad, fairly solid stout.

Peacehammer (239) - California, USA - MAR 17, 2012
pours thick black with almost no head. Distinct coffee aroma, with a decided chipotle tone. I’m not surprised that this is a very roasty beer with hints of chipotle and coffee throughout. Not a great beer, but not bad.
