COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Black Phoenix melds rich bold coffee with the smokey flavors of chipotle peppers, giving it just a touch of heat. To insure the freshest coffee available, we had our local Orange County friends, Kean Coffee, custom roast a batch for us. Notes of chocolate complement this complex and bold stout. This special release will only be available in limited quantities so enjoy it while it lasts.

I feel lucky I got this brew in a BIF then the guy decided to stop shipping brew out on his other commitments’. So here is to all you guys who got the short in of the stick. I hope the senders brews the sender got all were infected and drain pours. I split this glass with friends and poured into snifters we were greeted with big old tan head that didn’t quit, on top of a black bodied brew. The aroma of rich dark coffee dominates this brew with a slight chipotle coming up in the back end. In the taste department you get a lot of coffee at first. I think if this was marketed as a coffee brew alone it would be fantastic but the chili pepper is under done a bit. There was some but I really had to think about it to pick it out. I think it just needs a touch more chili the concept was great but it didn’t quite come thru for me. Serving type: bottle

The Pigs Ear wrap up tasting at ChrisO’s. Clear deep red - amber beer, thin pale head. Palate is smooth and semi dry. Decent fine carbonation. Tangy dark malts, some fluffy malt cream. Mild coffee. A chilli burn begins but never gets too much. Tangy dark fruits. Light semi dry finish. Just another chilli stout. Okay.

Bottle split at Chriso pre Xmas tasting, 06/12/15. Light black with a decent tan covering. Nose is light smoke, charr, spice, dark malts, toffee, cocoa powder, dark fruit tang. Taste comprises Chipotle, light roast malts, toffee sauce, green pepper, sweet’n’sour vibes, chocolate. Medium bodied fine to spritzy carbonation, semi drying close. Ok spiced stout ... not OTT in this respect.

Bottle share at Chriso’s. Thanks! As ’Bootleggers Black Phoenix’. Black, opaque, small foamy tan head. Aroma is earthy, touch of mint, red peppers. Body is medium to light, tingly carbonation, slightly foamy. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Taste is earthy, dark chocolate, spice, light metallic, plenty of chilli in the finish. Not bad.

Bottle shared at the chriso and Ruth pre-Christmas / post-Pigs Ear holiday tasting of 2015 - London. Cheers! Pours mostly clear brown with a tan cream head. The aroma holds dry chocolate, light roast, faint rubber notes. Light to medium sweet flavor with moderate chili spice, bittersweet baking cocoa, hints of vanilla. Medium bodied with average carbonation. More moderate chili burn on the finish, with licks of dry chocolate, mild roast, some earthy bitterness. A nice beer overall.

Thanks! to DutchDrebus. 650 ml. bottle sampled @ ZZT XIII. Dark brown, red amber hue, big mocha head. Nose is thin, mocha, caramel, thin with a weird vegetable profile. Taste is thin mocha, herbal, lightly vegetable, thin, roasted, mocha. Thin & grainy. Weak, body & base, the chipotle pepper appear to have completely turned to weird vegetable flavors with no heat even. Pretty clear miss.

Bottle @ ZZT, small sample. Dark color, short frothy head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, slight smokey touch. Soft spicy peppery burn in taste, carried by roasty and coffee notes. Heat is nicely balanced and does not overpower the beer. Liked it.
