1st July 2012 Bottle at the Kernel. Very dark brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Chocolatey malt and sweet malt. Mild mint. Mild minerals. Neutral finish - it’s all a bit disjointed and insipid - pretty disappointing.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bhensonb (9093) - Woodland, California, USA - FEB 15, 2012
Bomber from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Pours dark brown/black with a 3 finger creamy tan head. Aroma is mint chocolate with some gritty charred malt underlayment. Med at least body. Flavor is kind of chalky mint with milk chocolate and some dark roast malt. Certainly a brew that is distinctively different.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 hopscotch (8242) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - DEC 27, 2010
Bottle… Pours black with a small, creamy, tan head. The nose is a crème de menthe and chocolate coffee swirl with the most intricate rumor of sassafras. Full-bodied and velvety with tickling carbonation. The flavor is rich chocolate and mint – can’t identify the type of mint. Very well-balanced. Finishes chocolaty and minty. Excellent base porter. I could have done without the mint essence, but I didn’t commit to buying a chocolate mint porter without knowing what to expect. Very interesting and fun.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BMan1113VR (7420) - Los Angeles, California, USA - DEC 31, 2009
On tap. Pours with a large, tan head over a near black body. Head fades to a ring. Aroma...well it smells exactly like a hotel room pillow chocolate. Green herbal mint. Unique aroma that is sweet. Not sure how to rate that numerically as it smells like the real deal! Flavor does not hold its end up as well. Taste is the same but a whole lot drier, which emphasizes the mint over the chocolate. The end result is akin to Scope or some other minty mouthwash with a bit of anise. They need to add some lactose, or some unfermentable, to sweeten this beer up to allow the chocolate to balance out the mint. Mouthfeel is somewhat dry and thin.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 daknole (7209) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - AUG 6, 2012
Dark brown pour, tan head. Aroma is simple and pretty nice. Cocoa, mint and roast. Flavor is a nice blend of the 3. I quite enjoyed this.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 womencantsail (7100) - Garbage Grove, California, USA - FEB 21, 2010
A: An innocent enough looking porter. Very, very dark brown bordering on black. The head is a thin layer of tan foam.
S: You can definitely pick up the mint. The beer needs to warm up just a bit for the chocolate to come out. Once it’s a little below room temperature, this thing smells like a peppermint patty.
T: The mint is very strong on the palate. Again, the chocolate is somewhat subdued, but present. While there are some other flavors (chocolate, roasted malt, etc.), the mint really overpowers them.
M: A medium to full bodied beer with a moderate level of carbonation. Not quite as creamy on the tongue as I was hoping.
D: You really have to like mint to enjoy this beer. I found it nice to try, but I wouldn’t want to down a whole pint of the stuff.
