Drank on day 3 of the 2010 Mondial de la Bière. Misty brown, almost no head. Malty aroma of vegetable, slightly spicy. Taste of caramelized vegetables, mid-sour aftertaste. Bad way to end the Mondial!

Draft. Pours a dark orange body with an off whtie head with decent retnetion. Aromtically fruity with a fruity yeast tones. Sweet with pear and citrus notes. Caramel body sweet with dank malt tones, grass and wet wood notes. A modest warming with a slight crisp finish. Okay.

(Rating #3480)

Sampled at Winter Warmer Montreal 2011. Dark brown-red with a thick head. Aroma is lavander, spices, caramel and cherries. Flavor is very sweet with dark malt, cherries, moderate bitterness, dark fruits and some herbs and spices. Full body. This doesn’t have much to do with the saison style...

Aroma is potpourri and Christmas spices, clovy-stuff and other things that make me think of my Grandmother’s house during December. Pours with a nice dark barley wine body and no head to speak of. Flavour is clove and fruit notes mixed with beer. Sweet finish. It’s unique but not exceptional.

Tap at Mondial. Pours a deep amber brown with ruby highlights and thin fizzy head. Aroma is sweet caramel malts, honey, slightly burnt toffee, slight paper oxidation, leafy, earthy compost leather with light phenolics and grass. Flavor is slight solvent with wet cardboard, caramel malts, toast, nuts, light soy oxidation, mineral, wood, grass and earth with a somewhat dry finish. Strange beer.

Pours an opaque dark brown color with no head. Aroma of maple syrup (???) and fruits. Flavor of maple syrup, fruits and something burned. The body is light to medium with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. This is a weird saison.

My Bottom Line:
This oily Belgian-style Ale confounds with its distinct black olive notes, low carbonation and mostly sweet flavor profile, which is almost saved by an outgoing earthy and roasted finish. This was the first batch of this beer brewed in this equipment, so I guess we witnessed the effects of growing pains here.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is barely a ring of foam to crown the muddled dark brown.
-The mouthfeel is everything but Belgian-style (to me): slick and almost syrupy, faintly carbonated and with faint yeast character.
-Some smoke is perceived in the finish as well.
-I get the impression the word "Saison" here refers to "seasonal" more than the actual Belgian style.
-If I rely on Lubiere’s rating, it seems like this batch is going downhill fast.

On tap at the brewpub.

A hazy dark brown ale with cherry hues and thin off white head. A light woody aroma, with solvent notes. In mouth, a rather nutty saison with light coriander and curacao. Made with local maple syrup and honey, which gives the woody character. On tap at brewpub, Dec. 30 2008.
