Brassin 2011. (Rating #4138)

Black with an immense head that foamed over. Boozy in the smell and the taste. Very roasted, some burnt parts. A very black beer, some maple. Butterscotch that made it smooth, but perhaps some infection. Jason’s bottle.

Bouteille 500ml (2011).

Bottle: Poured a cloudy dark amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of caramelized malt with nice toffee notes and some hoppy notes. Taste is also a nice mix between some caramelized malt with notes of toffee with a sweet rich malt base with a surprisingly hoppy finish. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well brewed with an interesting hoppy finish which is not usual for the style.

My Bottom Line:
Fruit jam, caramel and light smoke coincide alongside alcohol warmth and delicate roast in this surprisingly frothy Scotch Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-.A veil of foam skirts the cloudy brown.
-The fruity sweetness adopts licorice-like angles at times.
-The prickly and expansive carbonation definitely makes the mouthfeel appear lighter than usual for the style, and the lower level of residual sugars enhance drinkability. Unorthodox, but it still works, imho.
-This may not be a top-tier Scotch Ale (nose and mouthfeel need work), it is still a flavorful accompaniment to a hearty meal.

Bottle.

Pivo je hnedá rozmazaný. Mnohé usadeniny cez zmes. Malý golier pena neusadí a pomaly zaniká.

Hazy reddish brown pour with a lot of white sediments at the bottom. A slim sheet of off-white foam stays atop it all. Candied fruits overtake sugary caramel in the relatively simple nose. Strong, almost biting carbonation is the first striking feature in mouth, feeling a bit awkward in a beer that is loaded with residual sugars yet thin-medium bodied. Sugariness expands on a dried fruits monologue, where apricots, peaches, raisins successively appear. Not much caramelization for a Scotch Ale. Instead, a vague earthiness complements the fruits and it’s quickly shifting towards a more alcoholic statute, growing warming in its lenghtening, peppery finish. Not quite the malt showdown I expected from a 9.5% dark ale and the fruits take the sugary road rather than being vinous/tannic/acidic, so it quickly tires down despite the strong carbonation. All in all, texture tweakings and malt extraction would have to be improved for it to compete in major leagues.

Bouteille de 500ml. Bière brune trouble, milieu humide, mousse brune passablement durable.
