COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Surtur fer sunnan
með sviga lævi,
skín af sverði
sól valtíva.
Grjótbjörg gnata,
en gífur rata,
troða halir helveg
en himinn klofnar
- úr Völuspá

Made by the same brewer who made Ölvisholt Lava. Surtur is more lighter and with probably higher drink-ability. Sound a bit strange. Good foamy head which lasts and the taste is a bit creamy with the oil and burnt tire one recognizes!

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2012 Black with brown head. Oily texture, roasted malt, hint of coffee, dark chocolate, little smoke, very complex but very very good. By far the best one ever brewed in Iceland.

The very best Icelandic beer manufactured since time begun. This brew is a work of art. Head: About 1 cm caramel colour head, fainting quickly (head size depends on how you pourit). Appearance: Pitch black .. looking at it from angles I can see some deep red amber colour in there somewhere .. Swirls very thick. Nose: Bonfire (soft smoke), burnt wood, fresh, medium sweet malt, white and dark chocolate .. very pleasant, no alcohol present. Taste: I dont know where to begin .. this is so complex, and changes alot when temperature goes up, this is a fireworks show. Full body, carbonation is just perfect (soft), Oak, smoke .. When I think of it, this is like a robust and unrefined version of Westvleteren 12, that is .. lacking the initial finess without the negativities. The lasting is very long giving burnt malt, anis, some wood, and a tingling medium sweetness .. very satisfying. This Imperial Stout was brewed in a very low quantity (unfortunatly) .. and it sold out in a matter of 1-2 days here in our small country of 300k people. If this brew would be available all year round, I would get at least 2-4 bottles a week. This brew is a perfect mate with a peated Islay whisky. Hats off for this wonderful brew.

how do you honestly rate something as good as this? Very complex aroma, some liquorice, tiny hints of smoke, wood, oak, annis. Pitch motor oil black. Nothing over the top, but very delicate and complex. Some bitterness, very woody, some hops. Some dried fruits, I just cant stop, this is an artform. The brewers have done a masterpiece of an imperial stout here. One of better beers I´ve tasted in my lifetime.
