COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Garún is named for the strong and brave heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales "The deacon of Dark River (Myrká)." A tale of ghosts, undying love, and life triumphing over death told against the backdrop of elements essential to Iceland’s character: ice, snow, and flooding waters whirling dark and mysterious. The same elements that inspire this rich, intense, bold and swirlingly varied Icelandic stout. Garún is a dark aura of intense richness and haunting aroma with notes of chocolate, licorice and coffee. Skál!"

Bottle. Stouty opaque brownish-black pour, thin espresso colored head, some sediment chunks on the bottom of my snifter. Nose is chocolate, roast, molasses, licorice, faint smoke. Mouth is oily and slick, lots of sweet chocolaty and coffee things going on, some brown sugar, licorice and sooty stuff lurking in the background. If I were on a Viking ship in the North Atlantic (or just sitting around watching geysers go off in Iceland) this is exactly what I’d be drinking. Quality stout from a brewery I’ve not tried before. Bit heavy for summer in Chicago but fuck it... been an abnormally cool wet one here anyway so far. Sláinte!

Very enjoyable. Alot of reykur and lakkrís. Well masked, beautiful thick mouthfeel wich brings all the palate into something real.

On tap at skuli bar. Pours pitch black practically no head. Aroma is chocolate licorice. Taste has lots of licorice and hints of chocolate. A very good stout.

Bottle 0,33. Gift from D. Shared with friends. Good example of very good stout: full body, complex taste, rich aroma. Liked it!

Chocolate, dates, plums and cigars round out the aroma. Dark brown, quick receding head although it seems very carbonated. Taste of very sweet dark chocolate, lightly smoky, bitter finish. Thick and heavily textured, yet smooth drinking. Strength is noticeable if not overpowering. Nice stout, like the baltic porters only tuned up in every respect.

Poured from a bottle. Aroma is rich and malty with a strong dark and lighter milk chocolate note. Medium light roast note with light tobacco and leather. Some medium light dark fruit notes of plum and berry with hints of anise. Hints of alcohol. More roast, tobacco and leather as it warms. Pours black with a large, fairly thick, mocha head that exhibits very nice retention. Medium lacing and medium length legs. Flavor has a medium sweetness with some nice, moderate dark chocolate and roast notes. Lighter milk chocolate notes. Medium light tobacco and leather notes with some light anise character. Moderate bitterness and light alcohol spice. A bit more alcohol and roast as it warms. Some lingering sweetness and dark chocolate with light roast and leather. Not as much dark fruit as in the aroma. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, another really nice, conventional beer from this brewery. Some light alcohol notes work well with the chocolate and roast. A very traditional beer made exceptionally well.

Dark cola brown colored, almost black beer with moccaish latte-resembling head. Aroma has coffee liqueur, vanilla, dark bread, roasted malts and dark chocolate. Flavor is sweet with coffee liqueur, bitter, roasted and alcoholic. Palate is full and soft. Mild bitterness on the finish with sweet coffee liqueur, cocoa and licorice on the aftertaste. A bit too sweet and coffee liqueurish for me.
