COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Garún is named for the strong and brave heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales "The deacon of Dark River (Myrká)." A tale of ghosts, undying love, and life triumphing over death told against the backdrop of elements essential to Iceland’s character: ice, snow, and flooding waters whirling dark and mysterious. The same elements that inspire this rich, intense, bold and swirlingly varied Icelandic stout. Garún is a dark aura of intense richness and haunting aroma with notes of chocolate, licorice and coffee.

Bottle. Near black in colour with medium carbonation. Cola spices, chocolate, and mild roasted malts on the nose. Flavors are of chocolate cake batter, vanilla, smoke, and a bit of espresso. Medium bodied. Lacking in hop presence, but there is enough roast to provide balance. Solid overall.

Bottle shared with northropfrye. Okay wow, the aroma on this beer is STRONG, and I’m loving it. I actually feel like I could get drunk off the aroma, it’s like deep molasses and dried fruits. It’s a little thick on the palate. Taste is like toasty, maybe a little burnt fruit and molasses -- rich and deep.

Dark black some brown head. Rich cocoa bourbon dry fruit bready aroma. Tomatoes. Taste is fruity, dark roast coffee and cocoa bourbon even though I don’t think it’s actually barrel aged. Anise. Not too boozy for the high abv. Sampled on the first Winnipeg Jets playoff game since 1996. Game one. The score is 1-1 right now.

33 cl bottle, Calgary, AB. Jet black, limited head. Great aroma, roasted dark coffee and prune with balanced resin hops. Thick and syrupy, sweet with vanilla and bitter coffee. Chalky on the finish which reduced the palate rating for me. Still pretty amazing.

ENG: 330ml bottle from Liquor Mart in Winnipeg, poured into the Teku glass. Just imported from Iceland (first time in Canada)! Almost opaque black color, with some brown highlights and medium brown head. Aromas of coffee, vanilla, chocolate, cream, dark bread. Tastes with dark chocolate, licorice, cream, roasted coffee, sweety. There is some kind of bourbon-barrel hints, but I don’t think this one was aged in it. Very strong smokinessnessness. Nice, sweety-smoky bitter aftertaste. No or low carbonation and high, creamy, thick body. Overall it’s a super complex Russian Imperial Stout, very strongly flavoured with sweet-bitter-coffee-smoky character! There is some alcohol in the taste though, but with the 11.5% abv it’s kind of understandable. For sure a thing to try! Will age couple bottles for next year or so...

PL: Butelka 330ml kupiona w Liquor Mart w Winnipeg, przelana do Teku. Świeża dostawa prosto z Islandii (pierwszy raz w Kanadzie)! Barwa niemal smoliście czarna, z lekkimi brunatnymi przebłyskami i średnią, brązową pianą. Aromaty kawowe, waniliowe, czekolada, śmietanka, ciemny chleb. Polecam! Zostawiam kilka butelek do poleżakowania.

Bottle. Very dark pour with a dense mocha head. Lots of caramel in the aroma, a bit of coffee, some brown sugar and a touch of licorice. Flavour is a little sharp and boozy, I could see this improving a lot with some age. Chocolate and caramel, some coffee, a bit creamy. A really solid imperial stout, but the carbonation and booziness make this a little sharp. Very interested to see how this does with a few years on it.
