"Garún is named for the strong and brave heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales "The deacon of Dark River (Myrká)." A tale of ghosts, undying love, and life triumphing over death told against the backdrop of elements essential to Iceland’s character: ice, snow, and flooding waters whirling dark and mysterious. The same elements that inspire this rich, intense, bold and swirlingly varied Icelandic stout. Garún is a dark aura of intense richness and haunting aroma with notes of chocolate, licorice and coffee. Skál!"

330ml bottle. Pours an opaque black with a medium, short lived, dark brown head that laces. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, licorice, dark chocolate and light coffee. Sweet flavour of chocolate malt, light roast, licorice and coffee with a dry, warming alcohol finish. Full body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Delicious.

My Bottom Line:
This intensely roasty Imperial Stout also shares peat smoke and blackberry fruitiness in a rich body licked by alcohol warmth.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam laces atop the brown-hued blackness.
-Raisins also appear in the aroma.
-The mouthfeel is well carbonated and thus doesn’t feel too heavy.
-The stark roastiness lingers till the very end.

Bottle, The Offie, Leicester. Black with a thin beige head. Coffee with gritty, bitter dark chocolate. Vanilla and oak barrel with peppery alcohol. Earthy with meaty soy. Spicy finish. Lacks a bit of complexity. Very good, though.

A deep dark imperial stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet chocolate malt with dark fruits, molasses, plums, licorice, alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a nice boozy sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, vanilla, molasses, alcohol warmth, rich and complex. On tap at Skuli Bar.

Small bottle from Steamworks liquor store in Vancouver. A heady black brew with moderate orange tan head and sweet coffee nose. Strongly redolent of coffee, chocolate and brown sugar, this impy stout is up there with the great ones, but cannot be meaningfully compared without a blind tasting, and that is out of the question for now. Very nice! 4

Pours almost black with good tan head that diminishes pretty quickly. Aromas of chocolate, coffee and malt with a slight touch of red berry fruit and burnt toast. Full bodied and good carbonation, great mouth feel. Taste is of vanilla, cocoa, raisins with slightly metallic finish.

Bottle from a Vínbúdin in Reykjavik. Pours almost black with a thin layer of beige froth. Pretty mild coffee aroma. The taste is rich with lots of coffee and liquorice. Slightly woody with a lingering bitter finish. Surprisingly high carbonation at first, though this fades after a few sips to leave a more oily texture. Very decent.

Black with thick beige foam. Soja, syrup and chocolate aroma. Taste follows the aroma. Full bodied.
