COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Garún is named for the strong and brave heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales "The deacon of Dark River (Myrká)." A tale of ghosts, undying love, and life triumphing over death told against the backdrop of elements essential to Iceland’s character: ice, snow, and flooding waters whirling dark and mysterious. The same elements that inspire this rich, intense, bold and swirlingly varied Icelandic stout. Garún is a dark aura of intense richness and haunting aroma with notes of chocolate, licorice and coffee. Skál!"

ENG: 330ml bottle from Liquor Mart in Winnipeg, poured into the Teku glass. Just imported from Iceland (first time in Canada)! Almost opaque black color, with some brown highlights and medium brown head. Aromas of coffee, vanilla, chocolate, cream, dark bread. Tastes with dark chocolate, licorice, cream, roasted coffee, sweety. There is some kind of bourbon-barrel hints, but I don’t think this one was aged in it. Very strong smokinessnessness. Nice, sweety-smoky bitter aftertaste. No or low carbonation and high, creamy, thick body. Overall it’s a super complex Russian Imperial Stout, very strongly flavoured with sweet-bitter-coffee-smoky character! There is some alcohol in the taste though, but with the 11.5% abv it’s kind of understandable. For sure a thing to try! Will age couple bottles for next year or so...

PL: Butelka 330ml kupiona w Liquor Mart w Winnipeg, przelana do Teku. Świeża dostawa prosto z Islandii (pierwszy raz w Kanadzie)! Barwa niemal smoliście czarna, z lekkimi brunatnymi przebłyskami i średnią, brązową pianą. Aromaty kawowe, waniliowe, czekolada, śmietanka, ciemny chleb. Polecam! Zostawiam kilka butelek do poleżakowania.

Bottle. Very dark pour with a dense mocha head. Lots of caramel in the aroma, a bit of coffee, some brown sugar and a touch of licorice. Flavour is a little sharp and boozy, I could see this improving a lot with some age. Chocolate and caramel, some coffee, a bit creamy. A really solid imperial stout, but the carbonation and booziness make this a little sharp. Very interested to see how this does with a few years on it.

A nice imperial stout. Pours black. Very little head. Aromas of burnt sugar, caramel, black coffee, dark malts. Flavours are bitter and roasty. But there it’s some nice brown sugar and molasses sweetness. A bit of booze too. Very nice.

Bottle from Sip in Tallinn. BB 01.2027. I like how the label paper feels - Kernel-ish. It pours a dark brown colour, the head is tan, huge, with good retention and lacing. The nose is roasty and very chocolaty sweet, the hops are there too, also a note of liqorice. Extremely sweet taste with intense bitterness when swallowing and in the finish. Lactic! Real nice alcoholic warmth, almost heat. Body medium plus, carbonation below average, mouthfeel quite soft. But to me it’s too sugary, and too boozy to really enjoy, and the intense bitterness in the finish is a bit too harsh. Otherwise nice.

larsga (6621) - Oslo, NORWAY - MAR 22, 2015
Medium brown head. Opaque black body. Earthy mineraly licorice aroma with toffee and wild berry notes. Dry-sweet licorice toffee and blueberries taste with chocolate notes. Fullish body. Mild, slightly hot mouthfeel. Dryish mineraly cocos and licorice aftertaste with toffee and alcohol notes. Nice, drinkable, and full of flavour. Tastes more like 8% than 11.5%. (0.33l bottle, Vinbudin Kringlan, Reykjavik.)

Pours dark and opaque as used motor oil, with thin milk chocolate head. Aroma is dark malt, with chocolate, dried fruit, coffee. Those persist on the tongue, with earthy hops and some alcohol heat, primarily on the slightly bitter finish. As with many other good stouts, the body is lighter than the appearance. Borg Garun is a very decent representative of the type, a good winter drink.
