"Garún is named for the strong and brave heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales "The deacon of Dark River (Myrká)." A tale of ghosts, undying love, and life triumphing over death told against the backdrop of elements essential to Iceland’s character: ice, snow, and flooding waters whirling dark and mysterious. The same elements that inspire this rich, intense, bold and swirlingly varied Icelandic stout. Garún is a dark aura of intense richness and haunting aroma with notes of chocolate, licorice and coffee. Skál!"

On tap @ Haven Gastropub. Black colored beer with a dark tan head. Nose is big on the roasted malt, burnt sugar, and a bit of ash. Some sweet molasses, notes of dark treacle, and licorice. Some coffee, alcohol, and dark chocolate, too. Kind of bitter, roasted flavor. Big dark treacle, burnt sugar, and ash character. Lots of coffee, dark chocolate, licorice, and molasses. Some sweet prune and grape in there, too. Intense.

Bottle from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours very dark brown black with a rather dark tan head. Aroma makes me think of graham crackers and chocolate. Med + body. Flavor is rather graham with anise, chocolate, and some decent coffee confusion. Heat is not an issue here. This is very different, and very tasty stuff. The dark malt is pretty far from treacle, but there’s some sugar. Still, I think it finishes towards dry, and there’s bitter from either hop or burnt malt. Very nice stuff.
