COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Very dark, coffee color - full rich body - staying head - effervescent nose - soft velvet feeling in the mouth - luscious. Malt character with a hoppy aftertouch. Monks used to fast on this type of beer for 40 days! No food, only beer.

Had at the Trollekelder in Gent but it was on tap as the Trollenbier bruin. Not super but still a very nice dubbel. A hint of sour in the sweetness. Serving: Tap

Brown pour. Tan head. Aroma of yeast, prunes, brown sugar and dates. Flavor is loaded with dates, honey, dark corn syrup. Not bad.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a surging white head that fell rapidly. Very malty aroma, lots of dried fruit, nuts, spice. Smooth, moderately rich mouthfeel on this. Chocolate and toffee flavor with the leathery notes I so often encounter in dubbels, a little yeasty spice, prune and date. Finishes pretty abruptly with a little bite of alcohol.

(Bottle) Poured a caramel brown with little to no head and no lacing. Aroma is nutty, vanilla and sweet. The taste is similar to the aroma with a hoppy aftertaste. Very enjoyable.

Pours a thick, light tan, five-fingered head, fades to a thin layer (should be poured slowly) and leaves traces of lace. Good carbonation and light bodied. Color is dark opaque brown. Dark fruit nose. Flavor is sweet and sour dark fruit, the higher ABV is not noticeable. $3.95 for a 330ml bottle from Colonial Spirits, Acton, MA.

Pours medium brown with a big, light brown foamy head. Nose is malty with brown sugar and caramel and a bit of hops in the background, but not all that strong. Flavor is surprisingly weak for an abbey dubbel, with the usual brown sugar, light roastiness, and abbey yeast toned down. A bit watery. Finish is decent- long and fairly sweet- but doesn’t really recover the disappointment in the flavor well. Nothing exciting here for me.

Came in the Exclusive Belgian ales gift pack, with 5 other brews (Christmas 2005). Best before 01/02/07. Pours a dark red-brown colour with a big fluffy tanned head. Retention is very long and good thick lace. The nose is milder than expected, with some spices, notes of coffee, raisins, plums, caramel and red apples. Smooth mouthfeel and medium bodied. The taste is also very light with some dark malt, dark fruits, slight bitterness and a clean finish. Very well brewed, just a tad too light on the palate and nose to be an awesome Dubbel.

Bottle. Dark brown colour with a nice beige head. Aroma and flavour of malt, chocolate, toffee and dark fruit.
