Oddly sour aroma with plummy stewed fruit aroma-- odd. Bready malts clash with a tart , almost sour flavour. This tastes quite unbalanced to me. Maybe I had an off bottle? | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 11, 2007 Bottle from LCBO. Drank alongside a Djarum Cigarillo. Lots of head on this guy. Moderately dark pour, with a sweet flowery smell with a slight scent of dates. Mouthfeel was medium-bodied with a moderately complex palate. Malt, blueberries & syrup in the flavour, with spice on the finish. Fairly enjoyable Belgian Ale. Snojerk321 (1937), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 10, 2007 Bottle. Brew poured a deep coffee brown with a big, rocky light tan head that lasted for days! Aroma was a little sweet, had some dark fruits as well as coffee, caramel and spice in the nose. Not bad. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 3, 2007 Pours a dark dark chesnut brown with a nice big foamy, sticky beige head. Has some banana, spice and chocolate in the aroma but with a chemical afternote. The flavour very malty, there is malt alway the way to the end, which doesnt leave much room for anything else, the finish has a touch of bitterness, and like the aroma, a afternote of some sort of chemical flavour......weird. Still a pretty beer, but doesn’t really live up to the abbey dubbel name, might be a good introduction to the style for some. exadore (92), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 28, 2007 Bottle. Poured a dark brown, with a very lively, off-white, lightly browned, head. I had to spoon the head off just to pour the entire bottle into a Trappist glass, which is due to either over-carbonation, or because I rapidly chilled this beer (~20 minutes). A very chocolate malt nose, tastes of roasted malt, with light hints of smoke, you can taste the alcohol. Overall, good, but the mammoth head really takes away from the beer, IMO. Weak aroma with definate sourness to it. Definate tastes of Chocolate/Coffee Malt and heavy fermenting yeasts. Heavy, large head that contiunuously froths, and almost annoying carbonation. Overall alright beer, would buy again, maybe. LordCorkscrew (945), Ronco Scrivia (GE), Italy
