snoot (277), Anaheim, California, USA May 26, 2004 Pours a dark brown, nice head, but it quickly recedes, leaving some thin lacing on the glass. Aroma is mostly sweetness, some dark fruits. Pretty standard dubbel, the alcohol is a little too noticeable for my liking, however. Choos (504), Taylors Hill, Australia May 8, 2004 Aroma to me was prunes and malt. Hazy ugly brown with a head made from big bubbles. Green apple with sherbert flavouring with an odd mix of malt (thanks Lunkie for helping me identifing the sherbert). Massively bubbly which detracted for me. Lunkie (1020), Glen Iris, Australia May 8, 2004 Hoppy malty aroma with murkey born colour. Explosion of nothing flavour and fizzy sherbert palate. Not sure how the Monks could fast on this for 40 days. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 6, 2004 Nice large creamy off white head that is fully lasting. Clear med-dark red-orange body. Sugary fruit aroma. Raspberry, cherry, strawberry perhaps. Bitter sweet dark fruit. Prune, medicinal cherry, grape. Sort of an earthy sourness. Soft palate. Not bad. TheDean (785), MIlwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 6, 2004 Hum, this is beer, and right now, I want beer, so it fills my current requirements. Other then being beer, it’s nothing special. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 5, 2004 Could not taste the strong alcohol but was in aroma. Sweet spices, alcohol, and effervesent carbination malt combination didn’t strike me or my mates bang on. Tart. Lovely head. Dry and unsatisfying aftertaste. mutant (854), Melbourne, Australia Apr 28, 2004 This exploded out of the bottle. Cloudy reddish brown with a massive head. A yeasty and salty aroma is contrasted by a very fruity malt accented taste. It is very different for a dubbel but there was too much fizz which detracted from the experience. FROTHINGSLOSH (1965), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 19, 2004 Updated: Jan 15, 2008This is a fine example of the Double style. A solid beer by all means, though it has become eclipsed as one of my favorites as I have tried several in this style that I like more. For the purpose of this rating we have selected the 11.2 oz brown bottle. This brew pours a dark red/brown color with a large tan head. The scent is sweet, yeasty and fruity and has a mild amount of flowery hops and chocolate. The flavor is very malty and fruity with a nut aftertaste and a hint of molasses. The texture is bubbly. The malt and sour fruit really come out as it warms. A very nice Double that really hits the spot.
