Very dark, coffee color - full rich body - staying head - effervescent nose - soft velvet feeling in the mouth - luscious. Malt character with a hoppy aftertouch. Monks used to fast on this type of beer for 40 days! No food, only beer.

330ml Bottle pours a frothy, thick, sandy, long-lasting head that leaves thick lacing over a very dark, rusty, brown, orange hazily translucent body. Aroma is wet dough and sweet, tutti fruitti cereal, banana, bubblegum. There are some undertones of wicker, cooked vegetables, and alcohol. Taste is a hoppy sour hops with few lighter tones of the nose. There are mineral tones in the drinking. It tastes like a Budweiser. Palate is medium body, sticky, and lively with a rather abrupt finish like a Budweiser,

Reviewed from notes. Pours a nice brown color with a nice off white head. The nose brings some bread, caramel, dark fruits, and a bit of booze. The taste combines the elements quite well with some dark fruits and a good amount of lighter Belgian yeast characteristics. Medium, creamy mouthfeel. Not fantastic, but a pretty good representation of the style. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-20-2010

Bottle bought from Vanuxeem warehouse, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Deep red/brown coloured pour with a healthy creamy head on top. Sweet, dark fruit aroma. Tastes malty, caramel, dark fruit, sweet, typical Belgian. Well balanced, decent Belgian dubbel.

11.2 ounce bottle
Yet another item from a gifted Belgian sampler this was a decent abbey ale. I think there are better alternatives from some of the trappist breweries though they might cost a little more. My personal preference is still for the products from St Bernardus - they tend to be reasonably priced, world class, and easy to find virtually anywhere. Still this is not a bad alternative.

Aroma / Appearance - The murky brown body hid in the bright daylight. A flat offwhite head was sticky and messy. Caramel glaze, honey walnuts, chocolate nibs, and malt hit the senses hard. This makes itself known without any subtly. Overall it could actually be toned down a notch or two and that would be fine with me.

Flavor / Palate - Viscous and chewy the mouthfeel clings to the tongue. Walnuts, almonds, Hershey’s chocolate crumbs, and nutty flavors collide in a textured blend of sweet and malty. The finish is a little weak to me despite the heavy body as if something is out of balance. Overall this is a solid abbey ale but not one I would hurry to pick up again.

Sweet, dark fruit, aroma and taste. Medium body. Plum colored, and slightly hazy. Below average for the style.

Bottled 33cl. It pours a hazy ruby, nut brown beer with a creamy tall light beige head. Buttery aroma. Sweet with raisin throughout. Not the best example of the style. Not bad.

Tap at Paradiso Georgetown. The pour is a clear cherry ruby with a medium, healthy, tan to yellowish head. Excellent retention and small but sheety, sticky lace. Aroma is sweet cherries, malt forward, grenadine syrup. Taste is malt forward, heavy on barley husk and wheat cereal, very cereal and grain heavy like raw barley and rabbit food malt. There is some light lactic acidity and spicy acidity but this cannot balance the insane raw malt character. A little unbalanced. Palate is medium with slight sticky syrup emerging.

ROGUE (1315) - Newark, Delaware, USA - FEB 23, 2011
33cl bottle. Poured a deep dark crimson color with a nice creamy head. The smell was subtl, with scents of carmel malt, spices, and alcohol. Initial taste was a nectar-like sweetness with a hint of orange and spice. Alcohol and fruit flavors became apparent in the middle, and the finish was silky smooth. An average Abbey Dubbel but still well put together.
