3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BückDich (5467) - McCall, Idaho, USA - FEB 16, 2004
Hazy dark brown color with a nice very carbonated head, no lacing. The aroma is very malty with a bit of corriander, honey & apple with a lasting tail of caramel & toast. The flavor is very lightly sweet like maple or molasses with a good balance. Finishes quickly with a brief tart/sweet feel and then it's gone. Good dubbel.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Sham (1846) - Seattle, Washington, USA - FEB 16, 2004
Cloudy brown pour with an off white head. Bread/yeast and malt aromas. Fruity as well, apple's coming through. Same with the flavor. Big flavors of apple along with the yeast/bread flavors, sweet malt, some molasses. High carbonation levels make the palate really bubbly like champagne. Medium body, with a tart finish.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 5000 (4965) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - FEB 15, 2004
UPDATED: FEB 16, 2004 Bottle pours a ruby brown with large foamy tannish head. Carbonation is very lively, lacing sticky, yeast visible. Typicaly Belgian yeasty aroma. Initial taste is slightly sweet and fruity. Mouthfeel and finish are dusty, with some notes of raisins and apple. Lingering dusty/earthy flavor A so-so Dubbel.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 mds (2118) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 31, 2004
very yeasty aroma. big fluffy head just like it's relative, the tripel. Opaque kind of mahogany colour. Flavour is spritzy/carbonated. Malt finish ends rather sweet.
2.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 7/20 roomtempbeer (185) - Franklin, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 26, 2004
Beer pours (in flute glass) a dark brown-red liquid with a very thin amount of off-white head that dissipates quickly to near nothing. Aroma is of a sweet sugar and sour apples. Flavor is a candied sweetness, and somewhat sickly. Nothing special about this one. Sampled at 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 warrior (213) - Mt. Wolf, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 25, 2004
A ruby brown color that poured with a big tan head. Very effervescent beer that I'm having to wait a while for the head to fall so that I can taste it. Fruity aroma dominates. Light tart and slightly phenolic flavors dominate with some background dark malt tastes. Thin body probably because most of the fermentable sugars were form a lower mash temp and candy sugars? A decent belgian dubbel, but I do prefer more body and malt sweetness in mine.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jercraigs (6473) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 25, 2004
UPDATED: JUL 27, 2009 2009-07-23. Dark brown body with a large foamy beige head. Very yeasty aroma, dry malt, blends with sweet malt. (6+) Surprisingly dry malty character with a touch of yeast. (6+) Average palate. 6/4/6/3/12-13 - 3.1 Bottle from LCBO
2004-01-XX. Red amber brown body with a big fluffy white head. Sort of odd flavours mingling about. Thinner body than I like in a dubbel. Not bad but uninspiring. 5/3/5/3/11 - 2.7 Bottle from LCBO
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Syd (920) - Waconia, Minnesota, USA - JAN 24, 2004
Bottle pours red brown with a giant tan head that soon dissipates and lace that does not last. The aroma is yeast and malt sweetness. The flavor is yeasty, bread like, fairly dry, a touch sour, and with lingering ale fruit characteristics. The palate is silky. Overall, not bad, but I prefer other Dubbels.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 SDbruboy (1864) - San Diego, California, USA - JAN 24, 2004
Bottle, pours dark brown with garnet highlights and a rich, long-lasting off-white head. Aroma is slightly sour, with a yeast and spice nose as well. Flavor is sweet initially, quickly turning to tart and bitter with some bread and spice. Mouth feel is full with creamy carbonation. Over all, a pleasent sensory experience.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 SpringsLicker (2822) - Tennessee, USA - JAN 21, 2004
This starts off with a respectable pour and only falters in the aroma and flavors. This beer needs more intensity to rate up with the better doubles, but was a drinkable beer. Maybe worth another try someday in the event this sample was below average.
