COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Very dark, coffee color - full rich body - staying head - effervescent nose - soft velvet feeling in the mouth - luscious. Malt character with a hoppy aftertouch. Monks used to fast on this type of beer for 40 days! No food, only beer.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Appearance is a clear dark amber with a two-finger beige head that dissipates down to nothing in a short amount of time. Good rings of lacing down the side of the glass as the head sinks and disappears. I’m surprised at its lack of yeast sediment floating around in the bottle. Perhaps this is a filtered Dubbel. Aroma is very malty with notes of bread, caramel, and some earthy chocolate subtly showing its head. Taste is the typical sweet Belgian yeast expected of the style, caramel, bread, nuts, and touch of raisin comes through as I sip. In the finish of the beer I pick up on some bready notes and a thought of butterscotch as the beer crosses the back of the tongue and turns to a small alcohol burn.

Pretty good Dubbel although not spectacular, typical dark fruit in aroma and taste, just too watery.

Aroma of molasses. Pours brown with orange highlights and a thin tan head. Notably sweet. Taste is nicely complex with molasses, raisins and brown bread all appreciated. Has a thick, chewy, very rich mouth feel.

A solid belgian dubbel, it comes in the mixed 6 pack from Brouwerij Van Steenberge. It has notes of dark fruits and pours a dark brown.

Bottle at home. Gusher. Dark brown pour, thick foamy off-white head. Aroma of bread, spicy malts, some rye and a hint of sour apple. Flavor is sweet spicy malts, yeasty with dark brown bread and some grains. Thick body and lively carbonation. Nice dubbel.

33cl bottle from the LCBO. Pours a clear deep mahogany colour with a large off white. Nice layered lacing. Aroma is yeast, esters, and sugar. Flavour is sweet dark esters and brown sugar. The sweetness lingers a tad, almost cloying. Medium body. A decent beer.

Appearance: very dark brown, with hint of reddish highlights; big creamy, fluffy light tan head that shrinks but lasts the whole way through; medium lacing. Aroma: dark sweet malts--caramel, molasses, brown sugar, oats; then some sweet dark fruits like cherries, plums, dates and raisins; then some yeasty spices. Taste: dark brown bread, a little soy sauce, unsweetened molasses and caramel, some dark fruit but mainly a big hit of smoked clove. Finish: dry, tingly, a hint of bitterness and fading malts. Notes: A fine dubbel. The nose promised sweeter flavors than were delivered and which I would have preferred, but the look and palate were top-notch.
