330ml bottle, poured into Leffe chalice. Colour was dark auburn, small tanned head which didn’t last long although some lacing was retained. Aroma was yeast, a hint of cranberry and liquorice. Tasted cranberry, carrot and berries, yeast strain seemed to be the same as other Van Steenberge beers. Well carbonated, slightly thick body, smooth. Overall hid the booze well, which is always a plus point, nice beer to accompany a heavy meal.

Appearance is large white head with amber. Aroma isn’t very memorable. Taste is some malt and spice with not much of an alcohol kick. Overall not one of the better Belgians.

330ml bottle from BePLUS, Xiamen. Pours hazy dark brown with a thin off white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, caramel and toffee. Sweet finish. Thought it was a little thin but it got better.

Alengrin (2464) - BELGIUM - DEC 11, 2014
Authentic abbey beer with hazy dark burgundy colour and off-white, moussy head; aroma and taste show estery fruitiness, orange peel, iron, candi sugar, the typical bitterish Van Steenberge yeastiness and caramelly malts, herbal hop bitterishness and alcohol in the finish. Decent enough but in all, just an ordinary ’massieve ale’ and nothing exciting.

Bottle as Alphens Dubbel. Pours a deep brown beer with a big creamy off white head. Aroma of malts, sugar, slight yeast. Some red fruits present. Flavor is sweet, very malty slight fruity. Yeasty mouthfeel with light carbonation. Quite a good surprise actually.

Decent flavours here but it has the same carbonation issue the tripel had for me - micro bubbles and too bubbly. Would like a less champagne-y carbonation.

Naja, vielleicht nicht mein Geschmack aber sehr malzbetont am Ende, röstaromen fast schon "verbrannt". ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

75 cl bottle at home. Dark brown with a red tint against the light. Tan head that stays the distance. Aroma is malt led, roast and with some fruit, plum or sloe possibly. Taste is rich malt and sweet fruit with slight bitterness. Good mouthfeel, dry finish. Overall, rather good. I don’t why, but I wasn’t expecting much from this. It has beaten my expectations, which is always nice!

Transfer from BA review on 2-10-14- Poured from bottle into a chalice glass Appearance – The beer pours a brownish mahogany color with a two finger foamy head of a tan color. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to leave a great level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the brew is a heaviest of a darker fruit smell with raisin and plum the most pronounced. Along with these smells are some roasted malt aromas as well as some light grainy aromas. Other aromas of yeast and a light spice are there as well mixing with a tiny bit of bubblegum to round out the aroma nicely. Taste – The taste begins with a roasted malt and lighter dark fruit flavor with raisin and cherry both there. A bit of yeast and some spice of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove come to the tongue more toward the middle of the taste being joined by a bit of caramel and some toast. The fruit and caramel flavors really sweeten the flavor profile at the middle of the taste, but then fade some as the taste moves on to the end. Some lighter grassy flavors and a bit of hay later on join the flavor profile. A coffee flavor really comes to fruition at the end of the taste, mixing with the rest to leave, for a dubbel style brew, a very roasty and darker flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the average side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. For the mix of Belgian dubbel and more roasty flavors of the brew the moderateness of both the carbonation and body is rather nice. Overall – A “darker” dubbel with more roasted flavors then I was anticipating especially at the end. A odd, but nice take on a dubbel.
