Found this in a gift pack of Belgian Ales at World Market around Christmas time. Very good example of the Dubbel Ale style. Abv of 8% but drinks very smoothly.

Bottle - clear reddish brown, low carbonation, small lacing at sides only. Strong caramel aroma, ting on tongue and in mouth. Ok tasting but but too much ting.

Bottle acquired as part of a Christmas care package from the aunt. Poured into pint glass based on being too lazy to look for another glass. Deep brown cola color with an aggressive amount of nearly tan head. Not getting very much on the nose...maybe some malt and a little bit of hop characteristic which comes as a bit of a surprise. Taste is pretty mild but there are the traditional Belgian dark fruits coming through. It incorporates roasted malts, caramel, and toffee. Some bready characteristics. Soft mouthfeel, effervescence, and a really enjoyable finish. Feeling more impressed by this one as consumption continues. Not necessarily an upper tier dubbel but overall a decent representation. I’m going to add this to the list of beers to have on the next international visit to Brussels as a fresher version may enhance the score even more.

I’m not getting much flavor at all out of this one. It tastes watery. I don’t see myself drinking this one again. There isn’t a single outstanding quality in my opinion...disappointing.

330ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long.

Looks: Cloudy hazy dark ruby red colour with a thin ring of dirt-like yeast sediments; One and a half finger head with crumpety light beige foam which lasts for 3 minutes; Beautiful sticky lacing and quite fizzy carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant dark malt, with light roastyness, caramel, strong toffee, light chocolate, dark fruits, sugar, tartness, bread and strong Bel yeast.

Taste: Mid to light sweet moderate dark malt, with roasted peanuts, strong caramel, toffee, shades fo dark fruits, light molasses, bread, strong Bel yeast, faint lemon, very light bitter hops and light grass.

Body: Mid to light. Very slick and creamy palate.

Mouth Feel: Fair dark maltyness in a very smooth and slighty watery background. Roast is light at first but strong flashes of peanuts come out, followed by nice caramel, toffee, light sweetness and bits of dark fruits. Very yeasty and very light lemon to round. Smooth as silk. Thin but lovely!

Hoppiness: No aroma, with thin lemon and light grass in taste; Bitterness is very low for an abrupt, fairly low astringent dark malty finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Nutty and slightly bitter to mouth.

Comments: This one gives a bit of sweet tease which is better than most non-sweet Dubbels. A tad light in body yet it’s quite silky and solid in aroma and taste. A better than above-average Dubbel. Quite a joy!

Bottle shared from the source. Nice picture of the horse palace on the label which reminds me of my walk to work at my last company. Not sure if that’s a good association to start with or not.. The beer itself is a hazy amber brown with a medium light tan head. Aroma is vegetal with big herbal notes, yeast, compost, light dark fruits and caramel. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
Earlier Rating: 3/7/2013 Total Score: 2.6
