(bottle, traded with bierkoning) Hazy, murky brown colour with a reddish shine and a rocky beige foamy head. Yeasty, sweet toast-malty with caramel, notes of dark berries and a vinous alcoholic touch. Moderately sweet flavour, medium to full bodied with a moderate, almost crispy mouthfeel. Toast-malty taste with raisins and a touch of caramel; sweetish malty, slightly fruity and alcoholic finish. Rather average Dubbel.

On tap at Trollenkelder, Gent, as Trollenbier Dark. Didn’t realise this was a rebadge of Bornem Dubbel, else I wouldn’t have ordered it. But it turns out I hadn’t rated Bornem Dubbel anyway. Very dark brown colour with a fluffy tan head. There’s a sort of moist malt character running through the beer. On the nose there’s some fat fruit and a candi sugar sweetness. And, although the fruit carries through into the flavour, its sharp rather than rich and the mouthfeel is curiously thin. Not unpleasant but I didn’t find it particularly engaging.

Poured a medium to dark brown with a large, quickly dimishing, brown head. Yeast and sweet malt aromas. Malty, caramel, sweet, and spicy tastes.

Bottle. Dark brown colour with a beige head. Aroma is light caramel malt and some roastiness. The flavour has the same elements, but alittle bit anonymous.

33 cl bottle. Cloudy brown beer with ruby highlights, tan head. Aroma is quite fruity. Plum and cherry brown sugar and a rotted peach character as well that isn’t especially pleasant. Flavour is quite sweet, malty with plums and cherries, light spiciness, clove/nutmeg and a great minty finish. Palate is not terribly rich and it seems a bit overcarbonated. It’s decent, but there are enough things that don’t really work for me.

Huge, brownish, dense head; dark chestnut, but fully clear. Dark malts in the nose, as brown candi sugar and a hint of liquorice. Fresh herbal smell as from parsley (often in this type of beer. Wonder what it really is). First taste is bitterish because of roasted malts, but underneath rather massive sweetness. There is some carbonation-induced acidity. Very full mouthfeel, more than for usual dubbels. Bit sticky as well. End is more watery. I taste copper too, but I'm afraid that's suggestion. Well, not really great. Average, archi-conformistic.
