afireinside96 (308), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 30, 2008 330 ml bottle poured into a Duvel glass. pours a murky brown with an audible large beige head. smells of cinnamon, raisins, and fruity esters. a whole lot of raisin and caramel in the flavor as well as some brown sugar and light spice. full bodied and long lasting head. finishes pretty clean, just a tang of hop bitterness. not the best dubbel I have ever had but it is very solid.
hellbilly (732), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Jul 3, 2008 commercial description of the color works for me... or rich brown with cherry stained wood hues and a gigantic scalded cream colored head which leaves random sheets of lacing in it’s wake. smells really malty and fruity... oxidized red apples, yeast, wood and some warm spiciness. the flavor reminds my of a riesling or lightly sweet white wine... golden raisins, malt powder, more bruised apples, brown sugar, chocolate and yeast. there’s even some tannic structure as well akin to black cherries and a light acidity on the tongue. the finish dries out nicely and leaves behind some yeasty aftertaste. light to medium body with an airy texture from big soft bubbles... BritAlesRule (54), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Jun 21, 2008 Color of weak medium-body coffee, that’s a good call. Head is rocky and goes on forever. Aroma marks this as a sister to other Van Steenberge beers, must be a yeast thing. Sweet candi-sugar is way in the background under a ’place’ kinda smell that I can’t pinpoint... not medicinal, but sterile... maybe the tank it was fermented in? Pleasant creamy body and mouthfeel. Though nothing startling, i could see this being addictive, but then I like the style. Kind of a floral-creamy aftertaste and an overall likability. tlind2 (143), Helsinki, Finland Jun 17, 2008 330 ml bottle. Dark brown with ruby highlights, expansive off-white head. Sweet aroma, balanced flavor with plenty of sweet malts and caramel. High carbonation. Not bad at all. elihapa (168), Hawaii, USA Jun 15, 2008 bottle. Pours a beautiful deep brown with a large tan head. Smell of bananas, malt and spices. Not a particularly strong or inviting scent. Medium-thick mouthfeel, with flavors of caramel malt, dark fruit, spices, nutmeg. Finishes sweet, perhaps with a bit of chocolate. Overall, aroma was a little weak and the flavors a bit muted, but certainly this is not a bad brew. Tasty and drinkable. Samma (46), Australia Jun 11, 2008 From bottle in Brugge. Almost black in colour. Substantial head. Very malty, almost burnt flavours with hints of date. Surprisingly smooth for the ABV-level.
